Mar 22, 2004 There is a wonderful site on the Internet which can help you and your high school student get money for college. The web site is www.fastweb.com and it is a free scholarship search site. Fastweb has over one billion dollars worth of scholarships. Each year about ten per cent of the scholarships go unfilled -- that is 100 million dollars. So apply, apply, apply. Another interesting note is that there are scholarships available not only for seniors, but also freshmen, sophomores and juniors. Fastweb is easy to use. You do need an email account. If you do not have an email account, then go to Yahoo and set one up -- it is free! So now you have an email account, the next step is to get registered at fastweb and again that just takes a few moments. Here comes the hard part. Fastweb will ask you a series of questions concerning your child-- You may want your child with you for this part. Some questions include where does your child want go to college, what do they want to study and what kind of activities did your child participate in while in high school. The next part has questions concerning you. What kind of work do you do, what organizations do you belong to and whether or not you attended/graduated from college. All these questions are designed to help you find scholarships. There are scholarships for students whose parents did not attend college, or if you are a member of IBEW, or the military. One of the stranger scholarships is from the American Pickle Packers Association. After you answer the questions Fastweb will located about 25 to 35 scholarships for your child and will email the results to you. Periodically Fastweb will let you know there are more scholarships for your child. And they will send you a reminder when a deadline is drawing near. So get on that Internet and find the money. ------------ About the author: Gary W. Smith is a teacher and retired Navy man. He encourages his students and himself to write.
