July 29, 2003 Was I asleep? Did I not see the papers or hear the news? Did our President, George W. Bush, announce the END OF THE WAR IN IRAQ? I don’t think so, I do very clearly remember hearing the end of the hardest fighting, but I do not remember hearing THE WAR HAS ENDED! I don’t remember the jubilation that would normally follow the end of a victorious war. If I did not miss this then why do I hear Congressmen, and the so-called leaders of various groups, putting down the efforts in which our troops are still involved? If I am not mistaken, we still have thousands of hard working, well trained, indeed the best trained, troops in the world on the ground; searching, looking, doing what they are trained to do - fight a war. Can I really be hearing Congressmen like Rangles of New York making statements that we have laws against what our troops have done? What did they do? In a war zone, they gave two sadistic, horrid, leaders of the opposition an opportunity to surrender. There is a word I have not heard before! Yes, an opportunity to surrender, and it was met with gunfire. The war is not over. Any gunfire from one of the troops of Iraq should be answered with only one thing, more gunfire than these “generals” could ever call upon. War, by definition, is a state of armed hostile conflict between nations. Is this not what we are involved in? Is this not what the majority of our elected representatives voted to support? Why, then, are those representatives, the press and those who have not served or know what it is to lose someone to “war” being so vocal to tear down what we have started? Why do those same individuals and groups want to disregard the great, no, not good, the great work our military officials and our administration officials are daily doing? Yes daily, oh we daily lose American fighting men also, yet nobody talks about the great work being done to keep those Killed-in-Action figures to a minimum. The major victories, the current ZERO POW rate are not being lauded in the press or on the nightly news. No, not a word! Just downgrading, lack of support, and a grasping to pick apart the battle victories that will lead to the overall victory, the war’s end. The liberation of a suppressed peoples, the end of horrid torture, senseless killing, rape, and the illegal work towards the manufacture of weapons that if used, sold or transferred could kill hundreds of thousands of innocent people. Did I also miss the change in the method and reasoning of our going to war to remove this horrible regime? It started as an attack on the government official who ruled that country as a dictator, and not an attack on the people. Did that change? Wasn’t it stated that we were not going in to take over and “colonize” that country? Did that change? Wasn’t it clearly stated that we were not at “war” with the people of that country, and we wanted to free them? Did that change? I think I have been wide-awake, and I think I completely understand what is happening today. I know that I have served for over 9 years in the Armed forces of my country and am proud of that service. I know that I have been awake to watch a very knowledgeable, successful and truthful, as well as country loving President and his war cabinet do an excellent job with minimum loss of our servicemen. I know that the way the two henchman sons of Saddam Hussein have been removed from any kind of power and the return to power was correct, successful, and will have the best results with, again, minimum loss to our troops. I know that I have been awake to see, read, hear and to analyze for myself the excellent way this war has been conducted; the way we have removed, killed and put on the run the killers who put their own people in mass graves; how we have removed and proved the removal of the rapists and the torturers who helped run that country. I know that I am awake when I say, THANK YOU for your leadership and strong determination, Mr. President, Mr. Secretary of State, members of the Cabinet, members of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, and Congress. Most of all, thank you to each and every United States citizen that supports our troops or wears the uniform of a country of which I am very proud to be a free citizen. ------------ Email Edward M.
