Role Models?
July 29, 2003

There needs to be a crusade against celebrities. People are being brainwashed to death about worshipping mere mortals. I saw a slight reawakening from this coma on 9/11 but soon we all fell back under the hypnotic spell of the biggest lie since the snake tricked Eve.

From childhood we are bombarded by the sights and sounds of Hollywood. We are taught that these faces and voices and opinions are worth more than our own faces and voices and opinions. We worship God on Sundays (if that) and the rest of the week we exhaust ourselves chasing a dream.

Has anyone ever realized that the majority of these “stars” were born into a privledged world ? Most of these people who enjoy our devotion have never had to work for a living in a job that not only is dissatisfying but is demeaning and grueling. Unlike the rest of us, they had parents who were doctors or lawyers or scholars and allowed these “stars” to focus on their “art” and expand their talent.

I’m not against artful expression, although I think it has exceeded the boundaries of good taste in the name of art, but I’m totally against humans being held up as sacred. Even without God demanding “thou shalt not put any other gods before Me”, I can’t understand why the human brain can’t see the foolishness of this.

I suppose I came to this conclusion the day I experienced this lunacy firsthand. I had gone to the movies to see “A Hard Days Night” with the Beatles. Here we all were in a dark theatre watching the fab four but unable to hear a word because all around me were idiotic girls screaming!!! Now granted, if the fab 4 were actually live in the place I might understand that these boy crazy females wanted them to hear their adulation, but we were watching a movie!!!

Now, I liked the Beatles, I admired actors and actresses for their performances, I enjoyed singers, musicians and athletes for their prowess, for these things do require talent and few people are talented, but they do not deserve my soul…

They are simply human beings who were predisposed to pursue these things while the rest of us had to earn a living to survive. And what is their inherent integrity anyway?; they usually end up drunks or drug addicts, making a mockery of marriages, excluding themselves from their children’s lives and expecting people to bow down to them ( check out the biographies)…

On 9/11 the world woke up for a week or two to discover the real heroes among us, Firemen, Policemen, Soldiers, Construction workers, Medical workers and those unnamed ordinary people who work to feed and clothe us. But soon The “stars” came out to “support” our country. These people who take our hard earned money to live lavish lifestyles had the nerve to ask us for more. These people who make millions of dollars every day and then allow us to pay for their autograph, asked us for money.

We gave, because we always give, but they continued to take.

Soon, they were back on the pedastal we built for them and I bet they all sighed a collective PHEW. For a few short days we understood what was important, God. Country, our fellow man… but we soon settled into a sleepy fog in the dream world we all live in, and the “stars” went on their merry way setting up more award shows to feed that insatiable appetite they have for self grandizement.

The worst thing is to see people like Oprah and Phil and liberals like them blatantly stoke the fires of this praise. These supposedly intelligent spokesmen are leading the blind down this silly path. These aren’t life savers or holy persons. These aren’t family members. These are PERFORMERS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!

Why do we kill ourselves to look like them? Why do we feel bad about ourselves if we aren’t impressive like them? They get old and dry up like the rest of us. They get sick and die like all of us. What sets them apart from us? Their money? Their fame? Fleeting things at best.

Oh they have causes and give to charities but how much of that is not bloated ego? What is there truly to emulate? Their reconstructed plastic surgery? The shoes that they wear? What is worse to me is that they have inundated themselves into our lives to the point that we actually believe what they tell us to believe simply because of their celebrity status. Our minds are molded into their mindset and for the most part they are ungodly thoughts.

These celebrities do not espouse God. They ridicule Him or anyone who follows Him. That is why they succeed in changing the hearts and minds of the young. They lead them down a “wide and pleasant path that leads to death”. It’s “cool” to be cool. But how cool will it remain? Did Marilyn Monroe feel “cool” when she swallowed those narcotics? Did Kurt Cobain feel “cool” when the shotgun blew his head off? Oh, you say, well these were troubled people… Perhaps but when they stood before the God who made them, the God who warned them not to be fooled by the flattery of men, how “cool” did they feel?

I really can’t believe these superstars have gotten away with it as long as they have. Like the peasants living poorly beyond the czar’s fortune, I can’t believe we still are enamored of this sorry lot. I hope for a world that someday puts things in their proper perspective. A world that can appreciate the art that takes us from our unhappiness at home for a little while, which it is supposed to do but not go home thinking any of it was real. In medieval times the entertainment was supplied by the latest fool to enter and leave a city. No one ran after the fool to follow him in utter bewilderment. The townspeople were amused for a time and then went about their business living their lives. No one said “ if only I could be that fool” or if they did they forgot about it soon enough. How did we get to be so foolish ourselves?

If only we could long for the God who made us and for the Kingdom He promises to give us. Not a dream at all, but a reality to one who is not a fool………………
