July 26, 2003 President George W. Bush listed three countries that constitued an "axis of evil" Iraq, Iran and North Korea. We have taken out the regime of Saddam Hussein and gotten rid of his rapist, murdering sons. Now it seems that President Bush is losing the focus on terrorism that he once possesed. Now instead of worrying about the other two countries that constitute the remainder of the axis of evil, we are getting ourselves involved in the crisis in Liberia. Our strategic interests do not lie in west Africa. Our next focus should be on the theocracy in Iran. The regime of Tehran is already on shaky ground. Protests hve rocked the country, and the protestors are not just students. Iranians from all walks of life took part in the protests. With 70% of the people wanting the current regime gone, and a whopping 90% wanting at least major reforms, it would seem that the supreme leader is about as popular as Gray Davis. If we exercise the doctrine of regime change on Iran we will strike a major blow against global terrorism and stabilize our situation in Iraq. The Iranian Government is lending support to shiites in the southern part of Iraq to throw out the American forces in the country. The Government also has indisputable ties to terrorist groups like hezboallah. Iran is really the linchpin of islamic terrorism. It would take very little effort form the United States to get rid of the theocracy. A vast majority of the population already is opposed the government in Tehran. If we give support to the dissidents, tell them that we support them, a military action to the capitol of terrorism would not be needed. President Bush would do well to focus on what has given him success, and what is really important to the country. Instead of worrying about rebels encroaching on Monrovia, and importing cheap drugs from Canada we need to keep our sights on what really represents a danger. That would be terrorism if you just skipped to the end of this article. Eliminating Iran would advance our war on terrorism immensly, lets not lose sight of that. ------------ Email Craig Chamberlain: craig_chamberlain@hotmail.com Comment on this column in the forum.
