July 17, 2003 Now I may just be another ordinary run of the mill blue collar slob but I know what I like on TV and quite frankly all of this “reality” stuff on the tube today is really starting to get to me! It’s all getting so stale! I don’t mean to put down any of the Survivor fans or the American Idol fans but just let me explain where I’m coming from … Who remembers the very first Survivor? You know, The one where Richard won? I liked that show! I found it intriguing and new. I felt it added some much needed spice to TV at the time. For the first time in a long time I was checking out this new “Reality” TV show on Thursday nights instead of WWE Smackdown! It was compelling and each episode became more and more Must-See but after the show was over I have to admit I was glad to check out what The Rock was doing again on Smackdown. What came next? Big Brother! Again, Reality TV was still new and exciting. I felt I had to check out this sensation and I did. I’ll be the first to admit I liked that show as well! It was captivating! You were always left wondering who would be the next to leave or where this or that alliance would go, who would backstab who and what they would be eating the next week! After that show came to a close I was once again relieved and thought the show was done and they would be happy with their success. I was wrong. Survivor two came out just one year later and the world was more excited than jam on toast! I attempted to follow this show desperately! Each week I would tune in and see what was going on or who would be voted off but the more and more I tried the more the show seemed to slip away in my mind. Maybe I was too caught up in the Nostalgia of the original series or maybe just maybe I grew tired of it. The same thing happened with the sequel to Big Brother! I just found it boring! Even if you follow the Nielsen Television ratings you will see that they dropped significantly as these shows continued with their sequels! Which leads me to a new question : If Television networks know these shows are slipping why do they continue to make them? To save money! When you think about it networks save more money on reality TV shows. Sure, they may seem glamorous and glitzy but really, little effort goes into them! Think about it! They don’t have to hire actors to fill out the parts or writers to put together the scripts! All you really need is a good producer and a couple of cameras set up and it’s game time! Is it just me or are the networks beginning to become, dare I say it …Lazy? What about American Idol? All of a sudden just become a superstar over night because you were on TV? So what, I was on TV shaking a politicians hand one time! (not really) I mean, what happened to paying your dues in the music industry? What happened to performing at dingy little clubs and sleeping in your car? Are those days dead? It’s beginning to look so! However I’d be a hypocrite if I told you that didn’t find some of the things Simon says hilarious! I also have a bone to pick with Joe Millionaire! I think it was a pretty low life thing to do when you drag all of those girls to France, Tell em’ you’re a millionaire and then use them like an old dish rag! I mean, when an ordinary carpenter has to tell women that he’s a millionaire to get a girl that’s kind of ridiculous! What happened to accidently bumping into someone, blushing a bit, making a date and getting married two years later? Do people have to go on TV now to get married? The same thing goes for The Bachelor and the Bachelorette! I’m not trying to upset anyone here or to start any fights or controversy! All I’m doing is sharing my opinion whether you like it or not. I’m just telling you that I would rather watch a re run of the Simpsons or Everybody loves Raymond instead of watching some reality TV show that’s faker than most things! ------------ Email Chad Bowie: jedimaster62@hotmail.com Comment on this column in the forum.
