Onward To Mars
Feb 20, 2004

My first thought on Bush’s decision to go to Mars basically was “What’s he smoking?” He’s using taxpayer’s money to go explore a dead red rock? Bush wants to go to the Moon? Weren’t we there already? Maybe with all the drinking and partying he did in his college days he has forgotten we’re already on the moon. I began to seriously doubt our president’s sanity until two weeks ago when a new word had entered America’s lexicon, the word being ricin. Not as frightening a word as anthrax. It is a deadly powder poison found two week’s ago during a Senate session. The discovery of Ricin created turmoil on Capital Hill. Senate offices locked up buildings that are usually busy with staff members during the day. This discovery represents the still at large presence of terrorism.

A speck can be deadly if swallowed or injected. Like anthrax, there is no known antidote for ricin. Reminiscence, of the still unsolved anthrax mail attack back in 2001; this new poison is not a battlefield weapon. Unlike anthrax spores, its long, linked proteins break apart in sunny conditions and unlike nerve gas; it is not easily absorbed through the skin. Ricin is used more for assassination attempts by white supremacist to fight the FBI and political assassins.

It is bad enough the terror alert jumps from yellow to orange every week. Children are being snatched right off the streets; do we really need this new scare? Even after three years, a woman in my building still handles her mail with long barbecue thongs; terrified her mail has anthrax. The President reassures that everything is fine and to go on living my life, except I still look up at the sky whenever I hear an airplane fly by and it sounds too low. I am always nervous when I go into the City. I love Earth, lived there most of my life. But Bush’s plan to colonize on Mars in the year 2012 is beginning to sound better each day.
