When Winning Stopped Mattering
Dec 2, 2003

The University of Miami Hurricanes defeated the University of Pittsburg Panthers on Saturday night 28 –14. This gaurnteed the Hurricanes a "share" of the Big East title with the University of West Virgina and a hold on the number ten ranking in both the AP and ESPN/USA Today Coaches polls, behind number nine, Florida State? Didn't the Hurricanes beat the Seminoles back in October? Why are the Hurricanes "co- champions" with a West Virgina team that also lost to the Miami? Some will argue that is has to do with the Hurricanes two losses this season (Virgina Teach and Tennessee). Okay, they are definately not a national championship team, but with the Seminoles also losing two games this season, one being the head to head lose to the Hurricanes doesn't it make sense that the Hurricanes should be no less than number nine in the polls? Now onto the Big East. Miami and West Virginia ended their season at 6 - 1 in the league play respectively. However, West Virginia's lone loss in league play was to Miami and yet West Virginia now lays claim to half the crown. The Hurricanes prize is that they do get the invite to the BCS, or the Boatload of Cash Scheme, game but didn't they earned that invite "on the field".

This ranking/Big East "co-championship" quagmire is just another example of how college football is run by dollar signs and not coaches and athletes earning an education and wins on the field. Instead it is left for the media and a bunch of sports writers whose last participation in an actually athletic event was when they ran to be first in line at the free university buffett table. At least that's how I make the call.
