Aug 30, 2003 When you mention pro-choice and women’s health people automatically think of abortion. One of the most compelling reasons abortion was legalized was for women’s health and well being. Now it’s more important to preserve the so- called right of legal abortion than to protect women’s health or to actually give them all the information so that they can make informed choices. For many years there has been a debate about using hormone replacement therapy (H.R.P.) on women going through menopause because extra estrogen can make some women susceptible to breast cancer. Many studies over the years have shown this and women undergoing H.R.P. therapy are informed about this and carefully monitored by their doctors. For reasons that are purely political, studies showing the link between abortion and breast cancer have been covered up and dishonestly debunked. But the truth is out there, more younger women are getting breast cancer. Just look at all the pink ribbons on low fat food products; they want us to believe that fat has a bigger role in breast cancer than hormones! But it’s hormones that make our reproduction system function and the function of the breast (to feed an infant) is driven by hormones. When a woman gets pregnant her body is flooded with estrogen. It’s estrogen that signals the breasts to produce more cells. Later during the third trimester of pregnancy these cells differentiate into milk producing cells. If a woman has an abortion during the first or second trimester before the extra cells differentiate they can later become cancerous. This makes sense because we already know that synthetic hormones can produce breast cancer. How much more natural hormones can produce the same results! I wish people really were proactive enough about women’s health to see that pro-life refers to both mother and child. Abortion really can kill both the child and the mother. ------------ About the author: Artist extraordinaire and political enthusiast when she is not at the beck and call of that Kimbal individual and various children.
