Aug 27, 2003 Last week the U’WA Indian tribe in Columbia stated a belief that I’m more and more inclined to believe down-right proverbial: “Oil is the lifeblood of mother earth”. Several band members are promising to throw themselves off a cliff in protest if oil drilling goes ahead on their reservation (by Occidental Petroleum in which Al Gore of Global Warming fame, owns one million dollars worth of stock!). Sadly, their commitment will only inspire proud fools and their Conservative shepherds to mock and ridicule the tribe as I heard Rush Limbaugh do. I was immediately inspired to run the risk of lessening whatever credibility I might have regarding diesel pollution, to write this letter. Over the past year I have been postulating the theory that oil should never be taken out of the earth. We don’t even need it to lubricate and that a fact! From large to massive oil and fuel spills, to raw fuel vapors swirling around the Ganges basin, to the ever present in your face exhaust from burning diesel oil and out–of–tune and/or running rich gas–powered vehicles . . . . .almost all that we do and have ever done with oil is damaging in one way or another. In the 80’s, while still living on Salt Spring, I had two Vancouver tow truck fleets (City Wide & Drake Towing) running on synthetic oil. It takes 100º more heat to oxidize synthetic. Unlike conventional oil, it still flows at 60º below and synthetic oil has six to eight times more film strength as well. All jet turbines use Phosphate Ester synthetic oil! At $10 a litre and $90 for each of my “Diester” oil changes...... if it hadn’t been as significantly superior to petroleum oil as my sales pitches promised, they would have pulled me apart with two tow trucks. One of the most destructive exhaust constituents of burning diesel oil is Sulfur Trioxide. It is in close proximity to the fiery belly of the earth that the brimstone (sulfur) of sulfur dioxide-come-trioxide (after combustion) really belongs. It only the central earth itself that actually needs and can deal with that black blood that here on the surface only amounts to life-threatening toxicity. From the most obvious to the seemingly least significant, everything in our universe has purpose, therefore I conclude that the earth needs her oil for her own operational functioning. If you lost all the water in your car’s radiator, your oil, serving in its secondary role of cooling, will save your engine for a few miles at least. Like an engine, the earth may need her oil for cooling and for lubricating sliding plates so that they don’t lock up and then later break free to become earthquakes. Interestingly, as regards my tentative theory, is that he hottest areas of the world seem to have the easiest access to the most oil. Two thirds of the world’s oil comes from the Middle East! Meanwhile......The earth calls out, “Natural Gas anyone? I have used my oceans of oil to distill a sea of non-poluting fuel for you.” But man, with the passion of a Hollywood vampire, elects instead to suck up the earth’s blood, making of it instead the blood of the systems of civilization. In the same way that quasi–spirituality glorifies the “energy” of sensualism, some American Republicans, actually call oil God’s pure energy gift to man — Rush Limbaugh said that one day. We then, exercising our worldly prerogatives — ambition having compromised integrity — with save-a-buck selfishness overshadowing the responsibilities of freedom — in guilty complicity, turn a blind eye to the contaminating of every facet of natural life here in paradise. On August 22, a Shell spokesman said that there is 20 years of oil left, and that Natural gas will be the fuel of the future. Limbaugh says 200 years, as he makes the short-sighted conservative case for renewed Alaskan and off shore drilling as the wise course of action for lessening dependency on foreign oil. I agree that the dependency must be done away with but not by the generally popular foolishness of contemporary Conservative methodology. Energy independence can be achieved via synthetic oils and simply implementing the already tried and true non- polluting fuel technologies. Engine oil’s effectiveness is proportionate to level; optimum oil level means that the oil runs cooler, remains stable longer and will radiate more heat through the block, oil pan and valve covers. The American Petroleum Institute (API) measures a motor oil’s ability to resist oxidation, at 210º Fahrenheit. Oil level was notably critical in some 1950’s engines where the connecting rods had small scoops that clawed at the oil’s surface in order to supplement lower factory oil pressure. Similarly with the earth, no matter where the oil is pumped out, the oil table drops world wide; it’s ability to reach and lubricate the earth’s plates diminishes; its operating temperature rises and the earth’s crust runs hotter and hotter as the supply is depleted. I wouldn’t be surprised if the constant lowering of the oil table is the true reason for melting polar ice; an overheated earth radiating its extra heat, that even with ever increasing volcano activity, can’t be effectively vented. . . . . the ice is melting from the bottom up; not because of harmless CO2 that we exhale on every breath. CO2 is literally plant food, but yet the public has been brainwashed into thinking of it as a poison! Why? So an Eco-tax in the name of Kyoto, could be levied on all fuels, polluting or not! And Ladies; you masters of the receptive side of life, wise to quickly say, “Diesel stinks!”. . you can certainly trust to that intuition but your expression is an incredible understatement. Let’s do some realistic prospective root cause research regarding breast cancer. Formaldehyde and Dioxin have been conclusively linked to Breast Cancer! (See the July, Alive Magazine re. the Dioxin connection.) Every stinking DIESEL ( industrial factory on wheels) is constantly pumping out FORMALDEHYDE and DIOXIN in huge volumes, whether exhaust smoke (soot – visible particulate) is visible or not. California last week talked of getting the diesel exhaust of school busses out of children’s faces. Diesel sales in Europe, thanks in part to Volxwagen Golfs and Jetta TDIs, are up 33% over this time last year — and of course, proportionately here as well.
