Aug 27, 2003 It is an absolute delight to watch conservatives pound their chest as if they now DOMINATE the political landscape. I think these children were in the minority for so long, that when they finally achieved majority status, however slim, they immediately acted as if the entire country was on their bandwagon, and there are just a few liberals left, only in New York and California. Let's examine that domination. The republicans now have a sitting President who got less votes than his opponent. The total number of Federal Senate and House seats, and state Governorships is about 300-275 in favor of the republicans. That's if you count the nearly 20% of republican Senators who voted not guilty on perjury in the trial of Clinton in order to keep their jobs. The republicans had a 55-45 lead in the Senate just a few short years ago. They now barely have a majority, and the democrats can block anything they try with Senate procedural rules and tactics. The last 3 republican presidential candidates have received 38%, 41% and about 48%. What a breathtaking conservative leap that America is taking. The last 3 candidates the conservatives put up for President have averaged 42%. - And here is where we currently stand with the republican agenda: - 1.) Smaller government pledge-----The current republican controlled Whitehouse and Congress have now outspent any previous democratic adminstrations or legislatures. The republicans are now the record holding champions in spending. - 2.) Tax cuts------Tax cuts have been passed on the federal level, which are being cancelled out by various local and state tax increases, to compensate for the lack of federal assistance. - 3.) The Courts---The present United States Supreme Court is made up of 9 Justices. 7 of them appointed by republicans. It only takes 5 votes to pass a decision. The court recently upheld elements of affirmative action and gay rights, and Roe-Wade stands. I look forward to the day when all 9 justices are republican appointees and Roe-Wade STILL stands. That's going to be very embarrassing for our conservative friends. - 4.) National Security---About 3000 American civilians were murdered on 9-11 under the watch of George Bush. (That's right kiddies, 9-11 happened under Bush, not Clinton. No way to spin this fact away.) Now we are coming up on nearly 300 dead American military personel under Bush. Nearly 300 and counting I may add. The total dead Americans under Bush, civilian and military, in just 3 years is many, many, many times greater than the total dead under Clinton's watch for 8 years. - Bye bye for now. I'll be back to puncture some more conservative bubbles in the very near future. ------------ Email Gerald Paul Hench: ghench@grwinc.com Comment on this column in the forum.
