Aug 17, 2003 I cannot claim to have invented the description of CA as The Liberal Petri Dish but I really think it's an interesting observation. I believe it to be true that all 10 major state offices are held by Democrats and of course there would be no dispute that the Judicial courts are similarly stacked with Liberal leaning advocates. So once again, I ask the question, now that we have empirical evidence of the results of a particular set of policies and decisions advanced by one party, can we make an assessment as to which policies are 'good' and which are 'bad'? Granted the words 'good' and 'bad' are based on the judgement and opinions of the individual evaluating them and are thus not universally applied. However, it is fairly safe to say that the overall state of California is in a complete quagmire and Gray Davis is the one that everyone is pointing to as the scapecoat. This seems completely unfair to me given that local politicians, school boards, judges, mayors, state senators and representatives probably have more culpability into the current sad state of affairs than does the governor. I would like to hear someone defend the state of CA and the state of affairs and issues of everyday life. CA clearly has natural beauty to it but that seems to be despite man and not because of it. I look at CA and I am ashamed. I travel on business throughout the US and CA has become in the past 5 years my least favorite destination. The traffic is bad, the cost of business is too expensive, the air quality is poor, there are too many homeless people, too much blatant displays of sex, too much activism, more road rage and anger in people, more panhandlers, unsafe streets, single moms, and its just dirty and foul smelling to walk the cities. These are just my observations let alone what I don't see in failing schools, over run budgets and the flood of illegal immigrants. They are also leading the charge against religion, they are leading the charge on gay rights and rights for illegal immigrants. They have the largest contingent of war protesters and anti-Bush rhetoric from liberal universities and of course liberal Hollywood. When are we going to have an open dialogue on the cultural impact of these policies and decisions and how representative the state of CA is of the American ideal? If I were the Republican think tank, I would spend my research dollars in the next 12 months understanding how far and wide the corruption and degredation has become in CA and use it as why the ultra-liberal experiment has failed so miserably when gone unchecked. I don't believe Gray Davis should be recalled because as others have said, political elections are the choice of the people and they should be accountable for their decisions. Instead of recalling Davis, the people of CA should be forced to live with him to fill out his term and reap the rewards of their decision. Let's just hope America can contain the CA Petri Dish and prevent the disease from spreading to all of us. ------------ Email Brett Keirstead: brett_keirstead@gelco.com Comment on this column in the forum.
