Sept. 30, 2004 CBS is at it again. By now you have probably heard of the bogus military draft issue, one stirred up deliberately in order to destroy support for the war on terror and then used to degrade support for President George W. Bush. But disingenuous reporting by CBS, to be polite, continues in other forums, too. The web site contains their "report" of ten George W. Bush flip-flops, but a careful reading indicates that they are often comparing apples to oranges and implying President Bush said things he did not. Examples include the following: Weapons of Mass Destruction Announcing the invasion of Iraq on March 19, 2003, Mr. Bush said, “Intelligence gathered by this and other governments leaves no doubt that the Iraq regime continues to possess and conceal some of the most lethal weapons ever devised.” Laer, Bush said, “We found the weapons of mass destruction. We found biological laboratories,” Mr. Bush told Polish television. “For those who say we haven't found the banned manufacturing devices or banned weapons, they're wrong, we found them." And recently, President Bush said, “I recognize we didn't find the stockpiles [of weapons] we all thought were there.” Note carefully that none of these statements ae contradictory or conflicting. CBS just wishes to PRETEND they are flip-flops. Regarding Iraq and the Sept. 11 Attacks, CBS "reports" In a press conference in September 2002, six months before the invasion of Iraq, President Bush said, “you can't distinguish between al Qaeda and Saddam when you talk about the war on terror... they're both equally as bad, and equally as evil, and equally as destructive.” In September of 2004, Mr. Bush said: “We've had no evidence that Saddam Hussein was involved with September 11th." Though he added that “there's no question that Saddam Hussein had al Qaeda ties,” the statement seemingly belied earlier assertions that Saddam and al Qaeda were “equally bad.” The Sept. 11 commission found there was no evidence Saddam was linked to the 9/11 attacks, which killed nearly 3,000 people. One might note here that Bush and the September 11th Commission are not the same and that a difference in their statements would not constitute a flip-flop. One also might note that the September 11th Commissino statement AGREES with President George W. Bush's statement in regard to 9/11 and Saddam. So why pretend, CBS, that there is a conflict and a flip-flop? Because they want to make it appear there is no difference in flip- flopping between Bush and Kerry! They are taking sides in this election! And beyond that, CBS, if honest and rational, might have noted that Bush never said there was a relationship between Saddam and 9/11, he said that Al Qaeda and Iraq had ties, which they quite clearly did. The Democrats make up Bush statements and then disagree with them and CBS "reports" these supposed disagreements as news. But luckily, the internet investigators are here! To be fair, Bush did change his mind about the Sept. 11 Commission. He initially opposed the creation of an independent commission to investigate the Sept. 11 attacks and later agreed to it. But I would expect an honest person or a politician who can read the tea leaves to change his opinion on such things. I note that such things are NOT basic principles. Regarding free trade, the steel tariff was certainly a detour from a free market position. Bush goofed. I think he later let the tariff die. Learning from mistakes is good. But I will give CBS a point hee. It was a deviation from a basic principle. On same-sex marriage, there was a Bush switch and again, I'll give CBS this one. I have always said Bush was an excellent politician, though I don't have to like some of these political ploys. I guess that's why I've never run for office! On the other hand, I tnd to agree with Bush's later position. I think that man-woman is the biological and social ideal pairing, and it is reasonable for society to take a position here. Allowing states to make the decisions would seem reasonable, except that we do have a clause in the Constitution requiring states to recognize decisions made in other states in some cases. This could lead to more legal wrangling and chaos. Perhaps the amendment is the only way to rein in activist judges intent on imposing their will upon the people. Stipulation: McCain-Feingold should have been vetoed. I suspect he would now if he "could turn back time." --Cher Regarding the war on terror, CBS is again comparing apples and oranges, fabricating disagreement betwen Bush's statements where none exists. We are certainly in a war and we are certainly trying to create a democratic climate in the world where terrorism cannot flourish as freely. These are not conflicting opinions! I think we can now fairly conclude that CBS LIES! CBS FAVORS JOHN KERRY! CBS WILL DO WHATEVER IT CAN GET AWAY WITH TO HELP KERRY! ------------ About the author Brooks A.
