Sept. 29, 2004 We live in a country where many freedoms have been won by the sacrifice of those willing to go into battle or endure hardships to ensure those freedoms. Do we not bear a certain responsibility to our forefathers to continue the same tradition that they wrote about. I believe that we do. Freedom of speech means many things to diverse cultures but the most important thing is that speech remain free. Micheal Moore produced several films which some film companies tried to ban. This only made people want to see the film. There is something about being banned that is forbidden fruit to those willing to cross over the do not enter line. While Mr. Moore's film is not one that I would choose to see because I personally feel he did a mockcumentary instead of documentary. Still I don't think that I would stand in line to bar anyone from seeing this film. Instead the merits of such mockumentary will either stand or come back to haunt him. Still one has to support the opinion that this film can and would cause someone to do violence towards President Bush. In fact he is not the only one whose columns I have read that bash our existing President. When words either typed or written creates a confusion so as to lead to any form of violence in any manner is that not a violation of what freedom of speech meant? It really is our responsibilty to take care that the words we speak does no harm to anyone else. What do you choose to grow in your garden? Will that be a flower or weed? The main truth is that the same people who died for our freedoms will still be willing to go forward and see to it that we enjoy them. I would say this no matter who is sitting in the office. I propose a radical approach to the current war in Iraq. Go out and thank a soldier any soldier that you meet for simply being willing to still serve our country. Go to the polls and vote your consicience and pray that most qualified person wins and then accept the decision of the people. That is showing responsibility for freedom of speech. I take my responsibilty seriously. ------------ About the author Judy T.
