Sept. 28, 2004 Emo. Emotional. That is what the short, yet powerful, word stands for in the world of music. The term is not as recognizable as rock, pop, or country, and yet, it has become a household name for this generation. Music that has a voice and a face for the many raging emotions that accompanies being alive; that is the basic of Emo. I am not saying that these bands purposely dwell on severly depressing issues; in fact, it can often be quite the opposite. There have been many love ballads, right along with screaming, bloodletting, heartache. The difference between Emo and the other genres of music is that Emo does not try to puzzle you with mind games: they wear their hearts on their sleeves. In addition to that, they have a unique sound, not quite rock, not quite metal, but almost somewhere in-between. It may seem a bit decieving when I say there is a distinct sound to Emo; this is true, but it is not true that all Emo bands sound alike. A ground-breaking Emo band, Coheed and Cambria, base their songs on a science fiction story (recently turned into comic book) that their lead singer has developed. Their singer, Claudio Sanchez, has one of the most amazing voices in music today. Some Emo bands have a punk feel to them, such as Taking Back Sunday, while others are quite artsy, such as Into Another. If you are thinking of trying out some Emo listening, there are a few albums that I highly recommend for your listening pleasure: Coheed and Cambria, Second Stage Turbine Blade; Brand New, Deja Entendu; Into Another, Ignaurus; The Early November, For All Of This; FurtherSeemsForever, How To Start A Fire; Funeral For A Friend, Casually Dressed And Deep In Conversation; Kill Verona, Trauma; Matchbook Romance, Stories And Alibis. Take the time to listen to these bands, I gaurantee if you're a true lover of music, you are bound to find something worthwhile in their songs. ------------ About the author: My name is Jen Bullard. I'm 25 years old, a wife, mother, and college student. Music and writing have been my passion since I could literally talk and write (I would be a singer, except for the fact that I'm tone deaf). I have a book published, "What Awaits Us After Death," it is a love story about a couple who are reincarnated through all different points of history, in all different places in the world. It is more a lesson on not losing your soul mate. My website can be visited, www.geocities.com/drblgrl. Email: ajbull1@comcast.net Tell a friend about this site! ------------ |
