Sept. 28, 2004 Wow!! Life gets more complicated every day. I ordered a book by Dr. Dyer titled The Power of Intention (Learning to Co-create Your World Your Way). It's a clear-cut book. Down to earth and right up my alley. In the book, Dr. Dryer relates that all of us have an inner source and no doubt we do. He also tells us how to tap this inner source, relate to the source, handle the source and so on, so we can obtain or have any thing we want. Now, don't get me wrong here. I'm not making fun of this. I'm not making light of the source nor Dr. Dryer. I'm not making fun of God. I believe in some of it. But, alas, I do have some questions. I understand the power of intention, the source and all that stuff. It all basically transfers into just ask God and He'll give you anything you want. But wait. I'm been asking God for things for thirty odd years. He's just not answering. What, then, causes people like Dr. Dyer to write books such as The Power of Intention, promising a whole new life if only one believes? Worse yet, what causes people like me the buy such books as the above mentioned and expect a whole new life? I wasn't born yesterday. I didn't just fall out of a tree. But the very, very worst is...this is not the first time. Saturday night we [my husband and I] rented The Passion. Nothing like I expected. Far more blood and relentless beating. I will honestly admit to not staying in the room till the end. My over-all opinion is...if it is even half true, it would take a man of super-human strength to withstand what Jesus stood. Now to my comparison of The Power of Intention and The Passion. But first, remember, no criticism intended. This is merely rambling thoughts. I'm not out to offend anyone, nor hurt any feelings, just asking questions to the air. Okay? Okay. The Power of Intention (from here on out I'll refer to the book as TPOI) states...go to your source, ask for what you want and expect it. It will arrive. That's pretty cool. In The Passion, Jesus, whom I know suffered so all our sins could be forgiven, asked, begged, cried, sweat, cried some more and still nothing. Am I to believe, honestly now, am I to believe God, who wouldn't even give HIS OWN SON a tiny bit of slack, is going to give me every thing I ask for? To see Jesus flogged, see his skin ripped open, to see and, yes, FEEL his pain, am I to believe God is going to grant me everything I ask for? Oh... I'm just not so sure. TPOI forgot to add five words...but very important words; IF IT IS GODS WILL. If it wasn't God's will to keep Jesus from being beaten to death and hung on a cross, how then can Dr. Dyer expect me to believe God is going to give me a million dollars or make me a writer or help me ace my algebra test or, for that matter, anyone else. I hope this teaches me a lesson and anyone else who buys self-help books expecting miracles. Maybe we do possess miracles within ourselves and perhaps someday we'll stumble upon them...but I'm sure it will be without those self-help books. ------------ About the author: Ann lives in the middle of a 'Corn Field' and is writing a novel titled 'The Bridge'.
