The Dog That Voted [True Story]

By Judy T. Lloyd
Sept. 28, 2004

Sometimes in a world that seems to have gone mad you find something that pulls everything into perspective. For me that something came in the form of golden colored dog a German Sheperd that we named Trooper. We aquired this fine specimen of man's best friend after a house fire in 1997. A friend asked if we could take him because the shelter was going to put him to sleep if they could not find a home for him. His crime was that he liked to lift Christmas wreaths and the neighbors had not taken kindly to that. That was their loss.

He was a noble dog indeed and stayed by my side faithfully after I endured several occurances of cancer. Never once did this dog try to knock me down or jump up on me which would have caused injury. As a result the dog and I watched television a lot and it came to pass that we would be watching the political process as it unfolded. I discovered a curious thing whenever the candidates came on the television to tout their reasons for being elected Trooper would react. It was very comical to see him turn him back and do a sort of phhht to Al Gore. It was even funnier when he would bark excitedly at George W. Bush. This occured on a regular basis.

I have to admit I was torn between the candidates and had not really decided which one to vote for. Someone told me. "Well why not ask the dog he makes more sense than anyone else in the foray." So we did and Trooper every time someone would ask him to pick would woof at George Bush. He would never fail to turn his back on Gore and do his phhtt. Mind you this dog did the same thing in picking a candidate for Governor of Virginia. He definetly was not a republican dog as he picked the democrat candidate for governor. Every candidate he picked won. The sad part is that we had to put him to sleep because he had cancer in his jawbone and could not be saved. I sure would like to know from doggie heaven who Trooper would pick this time. Hmm it seems my litte Jack Russell and Pomeranian mix Ringo is watching the candidates. I wonder if just maybe he knows something??? Stay turned for the next voting dog reviews.
