John Kerry vs. George W. Bush - Presidential Debate In Florida

By Michelle Malsbury
Sept. 27, 2004

As November 2nd nears we in Florida have more than just the election on our minds. Almost all of Florida has been impacted to some degree this hurricane season as four record hurricanes have battered our state in the past six weeks leaving thousands upon thousands of people homeless and without power or water.

I personally reside between Key West and Apalachicola, Florida. Both were spared the brunt of these powerful storms thus far, but with nearly 2 months left of this hurricane season will we continue to be so lucky? We sincerely hope so.

This Thursday marks the first presidential debate between George W. Bush and John Kerry. I am curious to see how things will pan out. The debate will be sponsored by the University of Miami in Coral Gables, Florida. Topics for this debate will range from foreign policy and the war with Iraq to homeland security. Despite being led by Jeb Bush, brother of George W. Bush, Florida traditionally has been considered largely a Democratic state. Furthermore, Florida has been a state of contention since the presidential election debacle in 2000 between Bush and Gore. However, Bush was awarded the presidency by the Supreme Court much to the chagrin of Florida’s Democratic population.

With such widespread destruction, statewide power outages, and lengthy recovery efforts ongoing many in Florida are uncertain that this election will turn out any different than that of 2000. Some 1.9 million homes are without power or the possibility of viewing the debate at present time. (www.cnnnews.com)

According to a poll conducted by the American Research Group in Florida last week, which was pre-Jeanne, Kerry led by 1 point. (46% Kerry and 45% Bush, www.tallahassee.com) This election may be too close to call and whatever the outcome we in Florida are interested in how these storms may impact our elections.
