Sept. 27, 2004 I wanted to point somethings out about being a professional journalist. I haven't been, but there are a few things I do know and I'd like to remind some who are who might have forgotten. I won't name names. We all know whom I'm addressing. (Okay, Dandy Dan Rather listen up) oops, I lied. Am I bad. I had journalism in college. One of the things I learned early on was check your sources. Just because someone tells you something doesn't make it so. No matter who they are, do you understand Mr. Rather? I would think you would know a basic like that. Also, anything which doesn't stack up factually doesn't get printed, or reported. It can get you in a lot of trouble. You might also want to be careful about what you say about someone. Some things might sound like news and is just gossip. That, also can get you in big trouble. I learned that the hard way and I guess after long years of being a newsroom big shot can make you forget something like that, too. I thought, when I was a big journalism student, I had a scoop. I was sure I had something which would bust everything wide open and get me a Nobel Prize, or at least a Pulitzer. What it almost got me was expelled. Not a good thing. I thought I had a big scandal about an administrator and a teacher and I was told no questions asked to drop it, or my neck was on the block and I'd be out on my fat little...well, you know! Those were the days of Woodward and Umm, what's his name? Bernstein, yeah, him. I'm not saying I'm near the newman Dandy Dan Rather is. Thank God! I just want to go on record saying I sure miss Uncle Wally (Walter Cronkite for those of you under 30). He, you could trust! Semper Fi! ------------ About the author: Lee Zelhart is a proud graduate of McKendree College in Lebanon, Illinois.
