Sept. 26, 2004 Writing this piece is not the best thing for me to do, but my conscience is leading me. I just pray it's not one of those deadly consciences. In what looks like a mild drama, men of the Nigerian SSS (state security services) are launching their recent attacks on the poor world of journalism. Imagine the recent attacks, on two of the country's newspapers all in the name of the said newspaper printing dangerous information. According to the reports reaching my ear, they were accused of giving the world dangerous information. Their (journalist) offices were ransacked by the SSS while they whisked some member of the press away to their (SSS)office for interogation. Laptops, files and some other documents were carted away by the SSS. The recent development was what drew my attention when a said journalist reported that the SSS came to his office with guns only for them to meet the wife who incidentally has her office in the same building with the husband. They whisked this woman away in the presence of the two little children only for the little creatures to cry their eyes out. The man said the children cannot sleep since then due to the fact that they are been haunted by what they saw. Imagine the trauma. If I tell you that I'm confident with what I'm writing now, then I'm a liar. I'm writing this piece with fear of the unknown. Who knows, I might be their next victim for spreading another man's story. Only God can save us from this inhuman treatment. If peradventure they come in contact with this piece, they should know that it's not everybody we try to punish that actually sinned. If they really want to effect their power on me, they should know that he that's down needs fear no fall which is my story. They should only be careful of themselves. A word is enough for the wise. I rest my case. ------------ The author is a Nigerian by birth. Tell a friend about this site! ------------ |
