Balls; Their Use, Appearance, And Influence

By Erik Ball
Sept. 26, 2004

Well we all know what the dictionary tells us about balls:

Noun.

1. Solid or hollow sphere.

2. Hard or soft, inflated or solid, large or small, sphere used in games.

3. Solid non-explosive missile (not always spherical) for cannon, rifle, pistol, etc.

4. (In plural) (vulg.) testicles, (fig.) nonsense, muddle.

5. Material gathered or wound in round mass; of snow, soil, wool, string, minced meat, etc.

But have you ever thought about the impact that balls have on your life? As you are reading this article, you are using lots of balls. Just think of it: you are probably using a mouse right now: there's a ball in it. You are looking at this very screen with the two eye balls in your head. The light you use to see your keyboard comes from a gigantic ball of fire: the sun (or if you turn on the light, you will most probably be lighting a bulb). Your computer and your entire house is standing on a gigantic sphere called earth. You may even be sitting on a ball chair. And if you're a boy...

There are balls, spheres, bulbs and orbs everywhere. We play with them when we are young: ball pits, hopping balls, snow balls and soap bubbles. Later we start using balls to play soccer, tennis, golf or lacrosse. We write with ball pens. We even try our chance to be a millionaire using lotto and bingo balls. Crystal balls to see the future. Warfare with cannon balls. Balls in our deodorant sticks. We put them on our antennae, our lightning rods, our buildings and our Christmas trees. We attach ball-and-chains to our prisoners. We eat balls: minced meat balls, spiced meat balls (mamma mia!), bubblegum balls and icecream balls. We watch Lucy Ball on the tele. Industry can’t do without ball bearings or things like glycol- and bucky balls. And beware: there are spheres in the concrete we make our buildings with. There are artists that make art out of balls or art balls. Even the animal world is full of hair balls, owl castings and beetle dung balls. The Sputnik is no longer there, but watch the sky for hail stones, moqui balls and comets!
