Sept. 26, 2004 With the birth of cable television and the internet, there is no doubt a great amount of news sources to choose from. There is "CNN" "MSNBC"and "FOX" just to name a few and then there are the many online sites to choose from, but along with all of that come the "Ticker" technology feature on these networks. I have tried reading the news stories at the bottom of the screen while at the same time looking and listening at what the newscaster above that is reporting, but sometimes I find that rather distracting. For while reading what is on the ticker display, and also focusing my attention on the news person, I notice that I am receiving part of the report from each source. For I might be reading an interesting piece of news there, when all of a sudden without completing the reading of the portion of news featured on the ticker, the channel decides it is time for a commercial break. While patiently waiting for the programme to resume, I try surfing other news channels for more information on what I was reading before the break, but frustratingly find myself returning to the channel I was viewing before only to discover that after looking at the ticker as it makes its rounds back to the beginning, that the news item I wanted to continue reading is no longer there. Or worse yet, it was, but being distracted looking at the newscaster, I missed it. Sooner or later, I end up switching the channel to watch something else because I think that I might see the piece of news I was so interested in learning more about somewhere else, but it does not happen. What in fact happens is that I forget I was ever focused on gaining information on the portion of news in the first place. The "Ticker" technology is great, but maybe for the speed reader, for some have yet to acquire that skill. ------------ About the author Judy Ramsook: I am in the process of publishing my first book titled: "Karen's Adventure" which is about two young girls who go in search of their missing parents.
