A Plea To Literary Agents

By Helen Mary Enos
Sept. 23, 2004

I am writing an open letter to all literary and script agents, in the hope (probably vain) that there is at least one agent out there who will take seriously what I have to say.

If an agent is listed in the Writer's Market, it is assumed, or at least hoped, that he or she is ethical, competent, and knowledgable about the publishing industry. Unfortunately, that is not always the case. For instance, many agents will state that they will respond within a given period of time to query letters and/or manuscripts. The writer then sends a query letter, along with an outline of his novel, to the agent. (Needless to say, the writer also includes a stamped, self-addressed envelope for the convenience of the agent). However, the writer is left waiting endlessly for some reply from the agent; a reply that is not forthcoming.

So, here's my advice/plea to agents: tell the truth! For instance, in the Writer's Market, state that you will respond to writers only if you feel like it, or if you're in a good mood, or if you're not too drunk--that way, the writer will not be left in limbo. Or, just say that if the writer does not hear from the agent within a month of mailing the letter to the agent, that means that the agent is not represented. At least that would be honest!!

Face it, agents, you already have a less than stellar reputation. You probably rank below attorneys and used-car salesmen. Why make matters worse by treating writers with such utter disrespect? Try a little compassion for a change.

About the author Helen Mary Enos: I was born in Massachusetts, but lived in Florida for thirty years. I recently relocated to Dallas, Texas. I wrote a novel, titled Final Justice, which was published two years ago. I recently completed my second novel, which is a sequel to the first. (This novel has not yet been published).

I also just finished a screenplay, which is based upon my first novel. I am looking for an agent who handles screenplays.
