Disintegration In My Fatherland

By Olamide Ayeni
Sept. 22, 2004

Some people seem to baffle me with their actions and utterances. Just some weeks ago, Nigerians woke up to what seems like a story from the moon. A group or better still an organisation known MASSOB comprising mainly the eastern section of the country orders it's members to stay at home in honour of the BIAFRA day. Quite funny.

In a country where there is law and order. The most appalling fact was that their patron was an erstwhile candidate who contested for the post of the number 1 man of the country. To shed more light on this BIAFRA and MASSOB of a thing, BIAFRA is the name these people want to give their embryo country if their wish to pull out of the country materialise. MASSOB is the association fighting for the actualisation of this dream.

Actually to be candid, everybody in the country knows that these section of the country are the ITALY and JAPAN of Nigeria. They manufacture and produce so many products ranging from electronics, clothes to other useful needs. They are the backbone of our commercial system.

This I think is not enough to pull out of the country. Looking at their population, it's kinda funny to see them standing on their own and since commerce alone doesnot make a country, its absolutely sure they will crumble if giving the chance to stand on their own. Nigeria as a country has three main tribes with different sub-tribes under the main tribes. Going away will not only cause confusion, it's going to give other tribes the idea of disintegrating.

To me, if these people want to go, let them go. It's a known fact that the dog that will get lost will not listen to the hunter's whistle. The only thing that will pain people like me, is if this action goes the former and usual way of war. I believe everything should be settled with dialogue and peace. We don't want war like the BIAFRA war of years ago.

Let them go if they insist. Atleast, Eritrea left their mother country in peace. All we are saying is no war Mr. president. Also, let this people think and look before leaping. A word is enough for the wise.

This is my view.
