Sept. 21, 2004 Is the welfare system really there for people? In the 1950's . There was no such thing. Neither was there family allowence. This was a time where people had no place to turn. A young boy caught his privates in a bob wire fence. This was in the early 50's. He went to his doctor, and the doctor would not help him. He told his dad that he owed him 6.00. And, until this was paid, he would not look after the little boy. The child got very sick, and infected. A man called the prime minister. He explained what happened. Still no help. Back in these days if the dad was to die, the mother was left with nothing. More times then likely, she had a large family. The children would have to quit school. To go out, and make a living. Now, today we have the welfare system. The cost of living would be the same as then. Because, of the rise in pricing. There is this man that got paralized in the right arm. From a car accident. He went to the welfare to see about help. They told him no. That he would have to come in there in a wheel chair. He had a family to support, and could not. Even though, he could never work again, they were not willing to help. In another case. There is this girl that has mulitple syclerosis, epilepsy, anxiety disorder, constant phnmonia, rynoids, and a bad case of ashma. In 2000 her brain shut down. It restarted, but ,now, she is disabled. When she found out she had these problems, she was living in a different province. In 2003 her lung collapsed from phnmonia. She had to have an operation, and was put in the hospital. Once she left there, they sent her home. A week later she had to return to the hospital. She had no way, and needed a bus pass. That cost 1.60. She claled her worker, and asked for the 1.60. Her worker explained they don't help for those matters. So, she ended up walking there. In 45 below temperatures. Sad to say, she got phnmonia again while on the walk. She went to the welfare to apply for disability long term. This was before any of the other stuff took place. It went through. But, not until she moved. She did not know she was going to get it. In the new province. She explained that she is on long term disbility. They cut her off, and put her on short term. And, she ,now, only gets half of what she should be getting. They told her when she first applied. If it went through, they would never bother her again. Well, to this day she is running back, and forth to the doctor. Filling out medical forms. And, that is only so she wont get cut off of their short term disiblity. That isonly 480.00 a month. And, they found a way to take 20.00. They believed a landlord. That said she was not living where she was. So, now she has to repay 4000.00. She has to pay her rent, phone, transpertation, and bills with this. Then, she has 50.00 left to eat for a month. She can't get ahead. Cause, the doctor says she cannot work. She cannot start her own business. They don't give her enough to ,even, live off of. They give a single person something like 260.00 a month. How could anyone live like this? They can't. The elderly, and disabled are forced to go out, and work. No matter what the doctor says. In the province (New Brunswick) the girl lives they do not help pay damage deposit. So, she has to come up with money for that. She ended up going to anti poverty for the money. New Brunswick has recieved billions of dollers in the past. If they were to give everyone a million, the problem would be solved. This would give the country a fresh new start. Thank goodness for food banks cause this is where this girl gets her monthly food. So, the welfare system is not there for peoples need. When in need. ------------ About the author Marlene Thornton: Born in Fredericton New Brunswick Canada. My bio is on my home page. Publishamerica is now doing my book as of Augest 20th 2004.
