All Of My Points Are Dismissed Out Of Hand

By Mark C. Durfee
Sept. 21, 2004

I know I have turned over a new leaf and I have deduced that the president is going to use faith to make things better for us but in this spirit of newness and reportage I find I must respond to something “Uncle” Ken Hughes wrote in an article entitled “Why is everybody always picking on George W. Bush”

In his above mentioned article Mr. Hughes wrote:

“Blogers are a part of the new media according to Fox News. It seems Blogers can be as irresponsible as some of the old media. I have another e-mail with a long list of allegations against the President giving various web sites to back up the allegations. Most of these web sites are liberal blogs with little or no creditability. That or misinterpreted information deliberately distorted to prove a point.”

Mr. Hughes and I had a sort of nice conversation via e-mail where he ended by thanking me because much of what I sent him by way of justification for my previous liberal position would be fodder for his article. Now I know that there is built in deniability to this because Mr. Hughes in his article did not name me by name he did write in his e-mail to me…

“I say all your research is somewhat suspect. I prefer some very credible sites only found on the Internet.” Ken Hughes

“When a reporter uses forged documents to bolster his story how can you think he's credible? I'm really glad you wrote. I'm in the process of an article on the very subject of why the Liberals cant get a message out because of their distorting the truth. No one listens to lier's very long. You've been a big help.” “Ken Hughes”

Now I never mind being referred to in a writing, especially by someone of such obvious level headed fair and open minded convictions as Mr. Hughes, yet if I am the party referred to as a LIAR and having used in my own quest for truth the referred to… “Most of these web sites are liberal blogs with little or no creditability. That or misinterpreted information deliberately distorted to prove a point.”

It leads me to ask …What is a blog and what is a bloger?

I have included below the websites and the information I garnered from them that I sent to Uncle Ken and I ask first is factcheck.org a blog? Uhhh…excuse me but Uncle ken in a subsequent e-mail referred me to factcheck.org to look up John Kerry’s biography so if it is a liberal distorted blog why is he sending me back to it? Or is it a blog when I refer to it and not a blog when he refers to it? I am a confused born again conservative?

Below are the cited websites, you decide.

Zell Miller's Attack on Kerry: A Little Out Of Date

Miller slams Kerry for opposing bombers, fighters, and helicopters. That WAS true – 20 years ago – but not lately. Kerry the Senator, once elected, however, Kerry's voting record evolved. He did cast votes more than a decade ago against the B-2 Stealth Bomber in 1989, 1991 and 1992. But by 1992 even President Bush (the current incumbent's father) was calling for cancellation of the B-2 and promising to cut military spending by 30% in the>wake of the collapse of the Soviet Union. It was no secret -- Bush did that in his 1992 State of the Union address. But Miller left out that little detail.

IS A SENIOR EDITOR OF THE NEW REPUBLIC A BLOG Politicians often rewrite history to their own purposes, but, as Bush's analogy to Iraq suggested, there was more than passing significance to his revision of the history of the Spanish-American War. It reflected not just a distorted picture of a critical episode in American foreign policy but a seeming ignorance of the important lessons that Americans drew from this brief and unhappy experiment in creating an overseas empire. If Bush had applied these lessons to the American plans for invading Iraq and transforming the Middle East, he might have proceeded far more cautiously. But as his rendition of history showed, he was either unaware of them or had chosen to ignore them.” The Folly of Empire by John B. Judis John B. Judis, is a senior editor for The New Republic

I have no personal animosity against Hughes or any one who chooses a path different from my own but the above does illustrate quite well, I think what is happening here. Not only at Useless-Knowledge but between the sides in this political season; it is simply dismissal. Anything or any point that I have to make or say is dismissed out of hand and most likely without even being read. This is what is happening on a national level also. There is no informed debate but rather any logical point the opposition has that is worth hearing it is drowned out by the whoosh of waving hands as it is dismissed as “a DNC talking point” or some other gesture of disdain. Pooh-pooh you are a fool.

Let me say this, I do not have the classroom time most of you here seem to have. I have no degree and I have no training in any trade other than auto repair. But that does not make me or any other person who labored for a living stupid. I do not go to the DNC or any other biased place that I know of for information and I do not believe everything I read. What I do, do is use this tool I have in front of me in conjunction with the one I have between my ears and look up information and then process it with my own limited intellect. Then I make my mind up. Although I can rip out these articles in under an hour the research that went into my opinion takes ten times that. In other words I do not need Dan Rather or George Bush to tell me what my opinions are, what my conscience is or how a human should act towards their fellow man. I come to my own seemingly easily dismissible opinion on my merit.

One writer here with a highly advanced degree has accused my recent conversion to the conservative side of the aisle as the actions of a petulant child. He said in an e-mail that because I have no valid points to make, I then turn to the degradation and personal attacks against the person I oppose, in the case of his writing I assume he was referring to Bush, my new hero. That writer has a very advanced degree but apparently is still unable to recognize sarcasm/satire, even with well over ten years of higher education.

I make no bones about it and I am consistent in my statements and I do not see the need to just “let it go.” It has never been my nature and it has never been the nature of those men I admire most, M.L. King a black guy from Georgia, Mahatmas Gandhi a brown guy from Probandar India, Malcolm X another Black Guy from Nebraska, Theodore Roosevelt a white guy from New York City and of a truth Jesus a Jewish kid from Bethlehem who led the way for the others.

About the author: Mr. Durfee is a trouble maker. He has recently decided that no matter what the end result of his research is that there is only one way to think about things and that way is your way.
