Sept. 20, 2004 In a less than satisfactory statement, Dan Rather has finally backed off (a little bit) from the forged documents regarding President Bush’s National Guard duty. Dan Rather and his “source” have issued joint statements. Rather said, in part: “Now, after extensive additional interviews, I no longer have the confidence in these documents that would allow us to continue vouching for them journalistically. I find we have been misled…” Uh huh. Sure, Dan…we believe you. Not. In turn, Burkett said that he “misled” CBS and Dan Rather. Rather’s Texas trip to interview Burkett, yesterday, apparently tied up the loose ends; as to how he and Bill Burkett would jointly release the information to the world. I wonder who else attended that “interview”. One of the still- remaining problems is that Burkett has already said that he had forwarded the documents on to Max Cleland…former US Senator who is working heavily with the Kerry campaign. My guess is that Rather, CBS, Burkett, the DNC and Kerry campaign thinks this will now go away. Well, kids, not if the alternative media can help it. You see Dan, et al, there is still the problem of the forgeries which resulted in fraud. Also, the forged documents were faxed…via “wire”. There is a little something called the ‘Federal Wire Fraud Statute’. Title 18, Part 1, Chapter 63, Section 1343 (Fraud by Wire, Radio or Television) reads: “Whoever, having devised or intending to devise any scheme or artifice to defraud, or for obtaining money or property by means of false or fraudulent pretenses, representations, or promises, transmits or causes to be transmitted by means of wire, radio, or television communication in interstate or foreign commerce, any writings, signs, signals, pictures, or sounds for the purpose of executing such scheme or artifice, shall be fined under this title or imprisoned not more than 20 years, or both. If the violation affects a financial institution, such person shall be fined not more than $1,000,000 or imprisoned not more than 30 years, or both.” You may not be out of the woods, yet, Dan and friends and your now-floated trial balloon just might be popped. Let’s hope so…on both counts. ------------ About the author: About the author: Sher Zieve is a Conservative political commentator, appeared on the CBS program "Mysteries of the Millennium", has been included in "Who's Who in the West", "Who's Who in the US" and "Who's Who in Entertainment".
