Sept. 20, 2004 It’s amazing that I still receive emails from a column I wrote a month ago. A fan of the Rock’s emailed me the other day saying how the Rock is a great talent and that I am just jealous because he is making millions and millions and I’m just some sad excuse for a human being. Well, it really doesn’t matter what that person thinks, does it? However, I do want to address certain things about the Rock. When Dwayne Johnson first came to the WWE/WWF, he was known as “Rocky Mavia,” a combination of names between his father and his grandfather. His gimmick was rather awkward, he had some wild haircut and a jungle outfit to match. What the hell? Dwayne had a lot of potential inside the ring, but good ol Vinny Mac just didn’t want to give this guy any mic time. Even as a good guy, his omen as a bad guy was pure; chants like “Die Rocky Die” were innovative to Rocky Mavia being what he is known today, the Rock. When the Rock finally emerged and brought with him all the tools of the wrestling trade, he was electrifying. You could see that a future world champion was destined for greatness. However, it seemed that the Rock started to look more and more like another pro-wrestler, Hulk Hogan. No, not because of being the movie star, but because he had to be world champ all the time. Just like Triple H, Shawn Michaels, Bret Hart, and Stone Cold Steve Austin; the Rock now had to be world champ all the time. Just like Hulk Hogan, the Rock has pretty much all hype and no show. He can punch the hell out of you and still have time to spit in his hand and hit you one more time; can you say fake? The Rock’s name isn’t even original. Remember Don “The Rock” Muroco? A former intercontinental champion and legend of the WWE? When the Rock isn’t wrestling he’s doing movies, which is perfectly legit, I would be doing movies too, but it seems Mr. Johnson can’t seem to make up his mind on what he wants to do. Make movies or wrestle? The Rock is better as a heel, I like him better when he is being that bully, but as a bad guy. Remember when he was slapping people upside the head, making fun of them, criticizing them, and yet he was supposed to be a good guy? A lot of people would say, “Well, look at Stone Cold Steve Austin, he flips people off, he’s a good guy” actually he will be the first to admit that he doesn’t cater to the fans, he doesn’t want to be a good guy. The Rock does acknowledge that he is a good guy when he keeps saying the Rock’s fans; in order to get fans or claim that you have fans you are admitting you are a good guy. I don’t recall bullies being role models, but then again our society has people like Marilyn Manson and Eminem as role models. God, no wonder our society sucks. What really burned me up about the Rock was during the year 2002 when he was on a leave to make a movie, then old man McMahon decided to give ol Rocky a call, because his ratings were starting to sink. Anytime, Vince needs a trump card, he calls the Rock or Mick Foley; how lame. I love it when someone gets stuck in a handicap match with two big names and yet that person has a partner and then all of a sudden Fat Ass Jim Ross begins to regurgitate, “IT’S THE ROCK!” or “IT’S MICK FOLEY!” Did anyone see this coming? My opinion? YES! DUH! It’s been done too many damn times, try something original. Like I was saying before, in 2002, Vince gave Rocky a call, because of Stone Cold Steve Austin leaving. The Rock took orders from good ol Vince to bash the hell out of Stone Cold and in return he would get the WWF title. The Rock hadn’t return for not even a week and BAM he’s world champion. Then a month later, he loses the title to Brock Lesner. Did anyone see this coming? You betcha, because around that same time he had to shoot “the Rundown” another movie. What makes me laugh is that after the Rock got beaten, he tried to do the “Finally...” chant and yet the crowd booed him out of the building. Looks like I’m not the only one that hates this guy. I’m sure Dwayne Johnson is a nice and genuine guy, but I think the Rock sucks because he doesn’t work hard as the other wrestlers do, yet you still see him in the openings of RAW and SMACKDOWN, they still sell his merchandise, they still have signs with his name on it, yet he doesn’t show up for work. That would be like you going to work, busting your ass, and the guy next to you doesn’t show up at all and yet gets paid more or the same as you do, and the only excuse he has is, “I’m making movies.” If I was Vince I would give the Rock an ultimatum; you either wrestle or make movies. It’s like what Steve Austin said to Triple H. Wrestle or go home. ------------ About the author Eric Schomburg: Visit http://www.geocities.com/schomburg2002.
