Sept. 19, 2004 There is a section of our community that definitely dislikes pornography and, given the chance, would ban it outright. Perhaps if the definition of pornography was simple they would succeed in their quest. Mostly, these same people feel that there is a link between pornography and rape. Very difficult to prove, mostly because sex is a private thing. After all, for years men had been coming home, slapping the little lady around and forcing her to have sex. This was never reported as rape. I guess (just guess) that this is less common in Western countries than it used to be. The reduction in that sort of rape has parallelled the gowth in respect for women's rights and the growth of a massive international market in pornography. It bothers me that children are denied exposure to love-making on film, television and games. They can, of course, watch extreme violence. Murders, shootings, autopsies - no problem. Not to mention demons, vampires, bad witches, slashers etc etc. These are held as suitable viewing for developing young minds, but when Janet Jackson flashed a little at the Super Bowl... Seems to me that if we want to influence young people, we should have more love on film rather than less. OK - argue about exactly which bits of the actors can be displayed at any particular time of day, but don't run love right off our screens. What is so horrible about two people in bed enjoying each other? The repugnant thing about rape is not that it is two people having sex, but that a man has invaded a woman using violence. It is the violence that I hate, not the fact that the actress has left her shirt off. ------------ About the author: Eric lives in tropical Queensland and writes books - some naughty, some nice - that can be found through Renaissance eBooks (renebooks.com) He reads widely and when he is not thinking about lunch, worries about the state of the world.
