Sept. 18, 2004 From my last column I must address a mistake I made; when I said that Japan had twenty-two thousand rapes a year, I meant to say twenty-two hundred (2200) rapes a year. Where compare to the United States we have close to ninety- thousand (90,000) rapes a year. The fact of the matter is pornography and rape are not really connected, yet some like to think so. Blaming pornography for rape is like blaming a video game for violence; it’s an easy target to attack, but it’s not the answer. What is so bizarre is that France and Germany, which are both countries that have bans on pornography, have more accounts of rape than Japan, and Japan has the most violent pornography in the world. Of course Canada and Mexico are close to United States’ average number of rapes; however, the second country that has the most rapes, believe it or not, is South Africa. With over 50,000 rapes a year, South Africa is the second highest country with accounts of rape and molestation. Why is this? Because of the poverty? Because of the incest that goes on in South Africa? Maybe a combination of both? The United States has the highest number of rapes for a reason; our society makes it that way. We have been raised that men are superior to women; however, with women’s rights and feminism coming in to play, it seems men have lost their superior power over women. Or have they?
