Sept. 16, 2004 Who ever said that "winning" was the most important thing? And why would they say that? Sure, I've won... we all have won, at one time or another But, it seems to me that I've learned more when I lost... At least I think so... But, judging by how many times I've lost in the last couple of years I must be the world's most knowledgeable person... But, I'm not.... I'm just a loser. Or so, I've been told. But who's doing the talking and who the listening? Whatever happened to the painful memories we had as a child? Those moments spent looking out a window at other kids in play... who some how forgot that we existed... Whatever happened to the promises we made that we would never be like them? We grew up...and became them. The years came and went and with them went our sense of right and wrong. Replaced by an overwhelming desire to "win"... To "fit in"... To "be all that we can be"... We've all sacrificed that child, who was us, for a few catchy sayings... We should be proud of our accomplishments... But, for me, I still remember that lonely child staring out at the others... I still remember how the hurt didn't pass until I made it pass... By force of will I made a conscience effort to put it behind... To look within for answers... that no one else could provide. Because there was no one... So, you can see why I find my own paths... One's that haven't been tried by others... I'd much rather travel down those roads less traveled, because... When I do run across another soul, on that path, there is an instant kinship. Because we are family... Not the common, ordinary family of flesh and blood... But closer in spirit, somehow... Because of what we have been through... Of battles lost... But, in losing them, we found ourselves.... ------------ About the author: Richard Anthony is a screenplay writer and has eight screenplays to his credit. He started writing in 1990, after the birth of his first son. Prior to beginning his writing career, he spent twelve years working at two different radio stations in Sacramento, California. He was an on- air personality for the morning show program at both stations. At his final place of employment, Mr. Anthony worked as an Assistant Operations Manager and Sport Director. After radio, he formed Pyramid Productions. A film/video company dealing with video and audio commercial production. In 1998 and 1999 Mr. Anthony’s poem “What is Winning All About?” was selected by the International Library of Poetry to be placed in their anthology book of American poets for 1998. They contacted him again the following year to seek his permission for “Winning” to be included in their Millennium anthology collection. He, of course, gladly gave it. You can access his webpage at
