Sept. 15, 2004 Mr. Ken Hughes asked for five good reasons to vote for John Kerry. (A Tribute To The American Military) The only caveat was not to mention the current president in those reasons. I love a challenge, even the simple ones, so here goes: 1. John Kerry does not dissimulate, prevaricate and does not use double speak when giving answers to real questions. 2. Kerry does not make people entering his rallies sign a paper acknowledging that they are his supporters. 3. Despite his length of service in Viet- Nam, which is quibbled about and questioned constantly; he did show personal courage by enlisting and volunteering to go to a hostile environment where he could have been killed. 4. Kerry has set a time table (4 years) for getting our troops out of Iraq. 5. As a combat veteran, Kerry is the more likely, of all of the candidates, to not give short shrift to returning combat veterans when they need help from the Veterans administration. 6. Kerry is more likely to have an environmentally friendly policy regarding clean air and land use. (Although to his credit the current president who shall not be mentioned did put curbs on diesel particulate emissions in place.) 7. John Kerry is more likely to not consider the export of American jobs to “be good for the economy.” 8. Kerry’s wife’s family makes catsup and it tastes better than oil on freedom fries. 9. Kerry is more likely to REBUILD the alliances with our historical allies. 10. Kerry will roll back tax cuts for those making over $200,000 per annum. 11. Kerry will most likely try to reinstitute some kind of assault weapons ban and the mega clips that are used in them. 12. Kerry was a former prosecuting attorney and will pay attention to the actual needs of law enforcement. 13. Kerry will not allow his vice president to call the shots, because he knows the people voted primarily for him and not the second in command. 14. Kerry’s great aunt and a great uncle were killed in Nazi concentration camps; which I believe makes him mindful of the direct result of terrorism and its consequences. 15. I believe Kerry actually went to class at Yale. 16. Kerry is the son of a mid-level Foreign Service officer whom I believe exposed him to diplomacy as a child. 17. The last good economy this country experienced was under a Democrat administration where unemployment levels were 3% or less. Anyone who wanted a job could find one. 18. Kerry has spent nearly twenty years working, at the national level, on problems that vex the nation. He is well trained at the art of co-operation to get things done. 19. Kerry does not consider Zell Miller a democrat and does not parade the mentally challenged in front of an audience to embarrass themselves. 20. Kerry when elected will not try to use any Supreme Court nominees to secure his place in history or try to bend it so far to the left that the laws of the nation become exclusionary. And there you have it; not five but twenty reasons and the current president was not mentioned once. (Well he was alluded to but it was to his credit so I hope that doesn’t discount the list.) Now I know that some of the more ideologically challenged will scoff and say there isn’t one good reason in the whole list but I say that it is a lack of perspective that differentiates the rigid from the flexible. It is that same rigidness and inability to see another divergent opposing view which makes today’s Republican Party something to be feared. I am still in the race for your write in votes so remember to write me in on every line of every ballot but if you forget your pen in the voting booth Kerry will be the second best choice. But either way the absolutely most important thing one can do in November is to show up and vote. So if you are reading this and are not registered to vote get up off your derriere and get registered!
