Sept. 11, 2004 It is always infinitely amusing to listen to teenagers gossiping. In fact, if you're a teenager yourself, it isn't only amusing, but a relatively reliable-believe it or not- source of information too! Whether you are part of the conversation or you are eavesdropping, it makes no difference; the grapevine dangles juicy grapes the whole year through. On the bus yesterday, I was listening to these two sophomores having a b*tchfest. It has never ceased to amaze me how long two people can go for without saying a single meaningful thing. Here's how the conversation pretty much went: "Oh my god, did you SEE Adam today? He was soooooo hot! I can't believe he's going out with KATIE I mean what does she have? She's so ugly! I mean I'M prettier than her!" "Oh my god you TOTALLY are. And did you HEAR Casey in English? She was like talking about how she really doesn't get the entire popularity thing at this school…how stupid is that right? As IF she doesn't think she's popular! She thinks she's like a…a…a PRINCESS or something! And she said that she like DIDN'T want to be popular. She's such a hypocrite!" "I KNOW!" The two pause for a second as they realize the irony of that statement. It occurred to me that when Monday came around, the two would be sucking up to Casey like they always did in hope of becoming "popular" themselves. One of them begins to speak again; to spare you the painfully mindless ramblings, I will skip to the next "important" part. "…It feels so weird cuz I haven't felt like that in so long…I miss the butterflies you know? Like the nervous feeling I get when I'm around a guy I like." "Yeah well maybe it's cuz we're like maturing or something. I don't feel it either with Josh and I KNOW I like him so maybe it's that. Plus its not like we're little girls having crushes anymore, we're high schoolers now." "I was talking to Mark last night and he was like 'you never talk to me anymore' and I was like 'well you COULD say hi to me first right?' but I don't want to talk to him anymore cuz I don't like him anymore. It's just different." Just so you know this is an actual conversation and not something I dreamed up; these things were actually said. Their conversation drifted from liking guys to criticizing other people's boyfriends-both of them conveniently forgetting neither of them had ever had a boyfriend themselves. Gossip is fun; I would be lying if I said I never took part in it. Sometimes, however, we have to take a step back and think about what exactly we are saying. If nothing else, at least make sure you aren't being a hypocrite. When the object of the conversation finds out, not only will you look like a total idiot but you lose all chance of finding out the complete story…not for more gossip of course, but more for knowing the reasons he or she acted why they did. Not everything is the way it seems. Everyone has a life to live and their own reasons for doing so. It isn't right to condemn them for making a choice, especially when it isn't your business and it doesn't affect anyone else. Anyway, did you SEE Jane at the party? I swear, she thinks she's like a…a…a PRINCESS or something! ------------ About the author: Ambreen is a somewhat cynical high school student who thinks teenagers are pretty much crazy (herself included).
