Sept. 11, 2004 I sometimes have been known to disagree with Michelle Malbury. Knowing she lives in Key West I still worry about her. She's been right in the way of several hurricanes (gee, I hope that isn't some kind of sign) and I hear from her afterward. I haven't heard anything lately and hope all is well. Hang in there Michelle. Actually, I also have relatives in Florida. A sister-in-law and her family in the Tampa area. I care deeply about them and have remained close even since my wife has passed on. They are great people. I want them to be safe, too. I'm sure I also have some cousins down there. One of my mother's aunts (who lived to 102 years old) lived down there. I'm sure some of her children lived down there, too. About that I can't be sure. I think about moving down there every year when it gets cold weather here in Illinois, but times like this make me wonder about the wisdom of that. I have been to Florida a few times, not since I was in college. We, my family and I(including an aunt, uncle and cousin and my paternal grandparents) ent summer of 1976. My aunt who was with us had leukemia and died a little later (Labor day weekend as it was) just before I started at McKendree College. I'm sure it's grown up a little since then. I'd like to go back, but I hope Florida will excuse me if it's not right now. They're lucky though; they have a good governor with even better connections. Jeb Bush. Which reminds me, President Bush was down there after the last several hurricanes helping out, giving funds for recovery and handing out water etc. I don't think I heard of Mr. (Heinz) Kerry being down there rolling up his sleeves and doing anything(except yelling at people which he sees as giving speeches). Be that as it may, this is not the first time Mr. Bush has been where it was a little dirty and dangerous. (Ground Zero, Iraq et al) serving Thanksgiving dinner to the troops in Iraq as an example. Anyway, I got off my point, sorry. I just wanted to express my concern for the folks in Florida and if I can help I'd like to (I'm broke, literally, but whatever else I can do I'd like to do it). Heck, I'll even hand out water. I just hope things settle down a little. I just wish them down there the best of luck and God be with you. As I said, anything I can do let me know. If it's packing supplies for assistance, or whatever. People who know me know I don't make offers lightly. I try to help out when I can. ------------ About the author: Lee Zelhart is a proud graduate of McKendree College in Lebanon, Illinois.
