Sept. 10, 2004 When, after President Franklin Delano Roosevelt (FDR) died, the Republican Congress passed an amendment to limit the president to two terms, it was thought to be a belated slap at the only four term president ever. As a Republican, I must admit that they made a mistake. If the American public wants a person to stay in the White House past his/her second term, who is Congress to deny them that choice? Would that President Reagan could have served a third term (or GWB or Ike, for that matter). We do not limit any other Federal Office (House, Senate or Judiciary), so why the president? Term limits for the president only serve to make one a "lame duck" upon being reelected, with Congress and the other power- brokers knowing that they will only have to put up with you for four years. If presidents were not limited in their service, Congress and the bureaucrats would be more responsive to a presidents initiatives. When the Founding Fathers placed a line in the Constitution that only persons born in the United States could serve as president, they had good reason. We were just recently seperated from Europe, and I believe the fear was that a foreign- born president would grant concessions to his Mother country or have conflicts of interest. We have been independent for over 225 years now, and I believe that the above problems have lessened with time. Many very talented people are eliminated from running for president due to this obsolete rule, a throwback to our early days. Call Senator Orrin Hatch or both of your two US Senators and let them know that you wish the both of these policies reversed, so that we might have the fullest choice in our chief executives, and in how long he/she might serve the people of the United States.
