Rantings Of A Frustrated Couch Potato

By Jose Galvan
Sept. 9, 2004

I have been on hiatus lately gathering material for future columns. Okay, so that’s only half true. For two weeks, I sat glued to my television both day and night watching the Olympics in its birthplace of Athens, Greece. I sat fascinated watching rhythmic gymnastics. When men’s swimming finals came on, I was on the edge of my seat cheering them on and jumping up in excitement when they won. During commercial breaks, NBC touted its upcoming fall season.

The guys who made Shrek finally brought their unique brand of humor to television with Father of the Pride. I tuned in during the rebroadcast of the series premiere and just shook my head. There has to be something better out there, but alas, nothing. The Olympics appeared to be NBC’s last big hurrah before ushering in what appears to be a disappointing fall television season not just at their network, but across the board. Reading Entertainment Weekly’s Fall Preview issue may or may not give some couch potatoes out there much hope.

The Peacock is fast running out of feathers to keep itself in the air. Law and Order spin offs, Fear Factor, surprise hit The Apprentice, and remnants of what was once Must See TV, a Thursday night staple for more than twenty years. Friends spin off Joey shows promise, but viewers have proven fickle if the network doesn’t give them what they want right away. The Peacock Network is not the only one suffering this fall.

ABC and Fox have some version of The Apprentice, where contestants vie for millionaire dollars. What seems like a sure bet for most networks isn’t a guaranteed hit elsewhere. CBS has expanded its CSI franchise to New York, and promises to back its reality show staples, Survivor and the Amazing Race. However, this will be Raymond’s last season, leaving a hard to fill void in CBS’ lineup.

Disney-owned ABC has shown signs of life with its lineup of new Sunday night dramas Desperate Housewives and Boston Legal, but is lacking in promising new sitcoms. Mel “The Passion of The Christ” Gibson may breath life into ABC’s Friday lagging Friday night lineup as producer of Complete Savages. The show will air between Eight Simple Rules and Hope and Faith. Reading the scoop on this one, I’d say look passed the sophomoric humor. There’s a real gem somewhere in there.

As for me, I’ll be skipping reality TV altogether, save for Extreme Makeover Home Edition. For sitcoms, just put up the do not disturb sign for Fox’s Sunday night lineup. George Lopez has once again changed time slots, but I’ll still be tuning in. There’s also my guilty pleasures like The WB’s Monday night dramas, and Fox’s The OC. I’m also looking forward to the return of 24, due back sometime after Monday Night Football is sidelined for the season.

The real promise in this year’s fall TV lineup isn’t in its new shows, but many of its returning shows. Sadly, the networks may have to fall back on these standbys if any of their new shows tank. Let’s pray that doesn’t happen or it’ll be heaping helpings of Law & Order and CSI for everyone.
