Sept. 7, 2004 No one has an idea how rough it is to be born with a famous name. Now, I am not talking about the kids of celebrities. They cannot help it except if they happen to become famous themselves and they forget to change their names. Then they deserve what they get. I on the other hand was no relation to the movie star and I never even met the man. Ok, my name is Robert Taylor…unfortunately I am a Jr. For those of you who don’t know what that means my father’s name was also Robert Taylor. All my life I heard are you any relation to Robert Taylor, the movie and TV star? At first I just denied everything but then people started asking me if I was related to the “real” Robert Taylor. My answer came to be, “Sure….it is no big deal!” I never lied about it. I always answered truthfully…Robert Taylor was my father. Then came the big question……”Are you related to Robert Taylor the movie star?” or the other one “Is Robert Taylor really your father?“ I leaned quickly…through my father…that the star’s real name was Spangler Arlington Brugh and I used that as a defense for the first question….the second one was ALWAYS answered with a “Yeah, it’s no big deal.” Then I got married and had a daughter. This was not intentional in any way but her name came out to be Elizabeth Taylor. She was NOT named after the actress…I would not do that to her after what I went through. She was named after several great- grandmothers as well as aunts and others. But it came out to be Liz Taylor just the same. The problem with her started not with her name but her Grandfather’s. She filled out her medical form for first grade and listed her Grandpa has contact person. The school nurse saw that Robert Taylor was her grandfather and ask Liz nicely if she could ask her grandpa for and autograph, saying that she loved all his movies. The actor Robert Taylor died on June 8th 1969. That was just the start though! She is now 21 years old and cannot order a cab or pizza without the person taking the order thinking it is a prank call. She is constantly being asked if she knows the “real Elizabeth Taylor“. Her comeback is a LOT better than mine ever was…she simply says I AM the real Liz Taylor and lets it end with that. A local comedy club did a 20 minute routine just centered around the fact that Elizabeth Taylor was in the audience. Needless to say that if she wants to stir something up she’ll call a place and tell them that Elizabeth Taylor will be arriving at a certain time. Of course they spend hours primping and preening to make things just right. Elizabeth Taylor will always show up…just not the one they think…all that work for nothing. Oh, by the way, when she went to school she had Melanie Griffith and Ed McMahon as classmates. That is one thing, people with famous names always seem to meet. I was in Niagara Falls, Ontario and rode in a cab driven by Randolph Scott. Of course we were both movie fans and shared the problem of having a famous name which made for a nice discussion. Parents, I implore you…if you love your child please think about what you are going to do to them. Before you name your child Michael Jackson or Brittany Spears think again. They will never be able to order pizza and they may get stuck in a town where they will not be able to get a cab to come home and visit you over the holidays. My life and the life of my daughter has been a living hell and our celebrities are not popular anymore. I cannot imagine what it would be like if they were. One more thing before I go. My daughter has enough White Diamond to flood the state of Texas. It is a sick joke but there are some people out there who have a more warped sense of humour that me. ------------ About the author Robert Taylor: I am 47 years old and I have been writing for about 12 years now.
