Musical Influence On The Mood And Soul

By L.J. Chapman
Sept. 4, 2004

When I was 17 years old, before I left high school, before I became jaded by life itself, I was in psychology class with one of the best teachers in exsistance. His name is Mr. Stowe. He inspired me to basically mess with my family's heads in the name of psychology. So I did. I decided that I was going to see if music had any sort of impact in the moods of a person.

Every night for seven days at dinner time, I would play a different type of music in the background. Rock music got angry responses from my family and it usually became a bad dinner. Pop/R&B got happy moods. Rap ended before it even began (Dad's not a fan of rap). And classical music got a mellow response. Music really affects someone's mood. I couldn't believe it.

Now I'm a jaded 24 year old who's seen a bit too much out of life, things that I wish I had closed my eyes for and I still find music has that power. People make CDs for moods they have. Couples have songs for each other. You can hear a certain song and be brought back to a point in your life that you had long forgotten.

My personal favorite song right now is 'Come On' by Ben Jelen. I think it's the most beautiful song ever written. My father prefers 'Elenor Rigby' by the Beatles. My son, mother and sister are all Elvis fans. My 3 month old daughter responds to classical music. Everyone has something that they want to turn up in the car.

Admit it, when no one is looking you pull out your old New Kids on the Block tapes and start singing 'Hangin Tough'. Don't worry, I won't tell anyone. Music makes a person feel good or bad or in love. It affects you. It's powerful and strong and beautiful. I still sing 'Jesse's Girl' because someone sang it to me when I was 15 and dating a boy named Jesse.

When you see advertisments saying that they are taking music out of schools and that everything is wrong, don't worry too much. Yes, music should be in school. I am a firm believer in the Save The Music Foundation. But no matter who does what, there will always be music around. There will always be something new to listen to and make a new memory with. People dance and make love to music. Music is life. Music is someone's passion and love all in one. Music is everywhere. You can't get rid of it. It's in the human soul.
