Sept. 3, 2004 A child with a dream. Is that not the first image the writer sees? A writer works part of their life time to see a bit of getting a glimpse. Some work over twenty years to see their word in print. Some give up, and those willing to fight the force. They move on to newer, and broader things to do. First you learn how to writer. Some times it takes years in college. Like this one writer. She went to college for nine years. Received countless poetry awards in the past. Red Skelton was her fan. And, her grand mother was Augusta Holmes. The great mystery writer of childrens novels. She wrote over 20000 poems in her time. With a lot of it stolen. By people who said if she ever made it, they would black mail her. Or, go make a book with her work they stole. Being a writer comes with many ups, and thumps. And, it sure isn't like winning the 649. A writer worked part of their life away getting to where they are at. So, the roylities would only be their hard work. It takes more then hear say so to speak to become a writer. Many writers are threatened to be black mailed way before their work hits the market. The young lady I am talking of for instance. We will call her Melinda. She was threatned many years before. She had her first novel stolen. Now, Melinda has over forty at date. She didn't know she wanted to be a writer until she got into grade five. She loved the form of a short story. Now, she is forty. And first getting published. Though, she never in he past tried to publish her work. Only in awards. She ws happy as a writer to know she did it. Melinda's view was she would never do it. Or, the world might blow up if she did. Before she gets the book. Melinda signed a contract with the publisher for her book. Four people signed it, and Melinda started to promote it. Everyday from the time she got up. She was either editing, doing something for the publisher, writing, promoting. Each day she set an hour or two for everything. For six months. She did everything the publisher asked, and no less. Then, she thought she better go check her real mail. Cause, she was very busy for a month. She never even thought to check her snail mail. So, Melinda goes to her box. She gets her mail, and a letter from her publisher. It states they are not going to do the book. Melinda sunk. Forty books later, and this. Her heart was sunk to think the writing world was like that. The publishe told her all her dreams was coming true. And, they sunk into a nightmare. She was emberassed to be around her family. Melinda has grand children she had to let down. Friends, and she lives in a small town. There are only so many book stores. She had readings at all of them. TV reviews, and newspapers. She didn't know ,then, how to bare it all. It seems she was made a fool of. So, Melinda goes on the internet. She tries to get a reason for why the publisher isn't doing it. They would not even email her. Two months past, and Melinda goes to her email. A letter from the local paper. Stating that the publisher emailed them. Just now, and told them they are doing the book. But, still haven't told Melinda. So, writing can be a bit unfocused. Cause, now Melinda has know clue what's going on. She just believes that after all her promotion. It must be just coming in. But, she is very happy once again. Yet, doesn't keep high hopes. Melinda took a nervous break down, and wanted to commit sucide. Her life was not easy as some. And, she didn't feel like looking those she loved in the eye. To tell them she was a failure. So she thought about it, and never told a lot of people. Good thing. Cause, now they are doing it. That would be strange, and make some wonder. So, being a writer can be challanging. And, it is a dream the first thing a writer sees. ------------ About the author Marlene Thornton: Born in Fredericton New Brunswick Canada. My bio is on my home page.
