Zell Miller Challenges Chris Matthews To A Duel [Part 2]

By Eric Schomburg
Sept. 2, 2004

From my last column, I addressed the Zell Miller speech and the fight with Chris Matthews on Hardball Wednesday night. Today, I want to say that my comments from my last column were completely misleading, misleading meaning I didn’t take a full look at the entire picture.

I will say I hold NO APOLOGY for my words, I’m an American and I have the right to make mistakes; however, I will say that I didn’t WATCH the speech I READ the speech of Mr. Zell Miller. I didn’t see the whole interview, I only saw the part where Zell Miller was yelling at Chris Matthews. Then I saw the interview with a woman that Chris interviewed and literally destroyed her, and I thought “Oops, maybe that is why Zell was so ticked off in the first place.” I’m not a fan of politics, I can tell you right now that either way you go, whether it be Bush or Kerry, we’re going to get screwed somehow. But this is why I never wrote about politics in the first place.

I’ve been receiving a lot of emails and 90% of them were hate mail, the other 10% were either telling me that maybe I was misinformed by what the speech was truly saying or somehow agreeing with the words I used. Obviously the ones that gave me the hate mail were unintelligent rednecks that really just gave me a smile on my face, rather than hurting my feelings. Because it was that same attitude that Mr. Zell Miller bestowed at the convention last night.

What is really funny is how everyone didn’t focus on anything I said about agreeing with him on anything he said about Kerry. Just incase anyone missed it, I will rewrite it for you. I agree with him about the family issue, and how we should support our troops, and how we should support our troops with votes to bring weapons to our troops. I also agree that we shouldn’t vote for a President who wants to deny any weapons or Army helicopter like the Apache Helicopter for our troops. But I also agree with what Cheney said, we can’t let other attacks occur before we take action, we have to strike now and strike hard on our enemies, and in order to do that we must have weapons. Yes, I agree with Zell Miller. Once again, I AGREE WITH ZELL MILLER! That we can’t arm our tanks with spitballs.

I actually took the time to stay up till five o’clock in the morning just to WATCH, not read, Mr. Zell Miller do his speech. I was misinformed. He wasn’t attacking me personally, but he was just addressing the fact that our troops are the ones to thank. By reading it, it looked a whole lot different. I guess it’s what my mother always said, it’s not what you say, it’s how you say it. So, I admit, I was misinformed, but I hold no apology for it. As an American I have the right to make mistakes. You should read my column about racism and art. I was skeptical about putting the word “nigger” in my book, because I thought people would think I was a racist, because people are like that, you may say or see a certain word, and people would think you was a racist. Look at John Lennon and what he said about Jesus Christ; his comment was, “The Beatles are bigger than Jesus,” but that wasn’t his intention to say “We’re better than Jesus,” he’s saying that they are just as popular as Jesus. Even I was fooled.

As far as Chris Matthews, yes, once again I was wrong about that too. Chris was trying to talk over Mr. Miller, and as a direct attack back, Mr. Miller stood his ground and screamed back at him. Mr. Miller was stating that he was not going to be like that woman and get his ass handed to him, and Mr. Miller was putting Chris Matthews in his place. After watching the interview again during After Hours, I have to admit that Miller was just trying to answer a question and Matthews was trying to make stupid comments like, “Do you think that Kerry will use spitballs?” Um...wasn’t that a metaphor?

I am not trying to use any excuse for my last column, except that I was misinformed about the speech by reading it, and not watching it. But that is what is so great about this country is that I can speak my mind and of course you can speak your mind. Whether you’re right or wrong, you can speak your mind however your want. You can misinterpret something and still be man enough to say you were wrong about it the next day. But then again, this is why I didn’t like talking about politics in the first place, because I knew by writing that column that I would get a lot of heat on me, but it was heat well placed.
