Sept. 1, 2004 Let me just preface this by saying, who can argue with Arnold Schwarzenegger. I don't mean because he's BIG and has muscles enough to rip the arms off a gorilla, yeah that's true. I mean I sat and listened to his speech. There were a lot of truths in what he said. Take for instance what he said about growing up in a country ruled by communists and then coming over here and hearing Nixon speak. I guess when you grow up in fear of saying the wrong thing and getting hauled off to Russia and hear something positive, even if it came out of Nixon's mouth, it has to sound pretty good. I am not dissing Nixon, though. Do you find it ironic Michael J.Fox, who in one of his early television rolls, played a conservative son of liberal parents? A character who worshipped Nixon? No, Nixon had his faults, but there was also much I liked about him. Talk about Viet Nam, he was the man who got us out. It wasn't a victory that's for sure, but it was out. Something the Democrats didn't do. As a matter of fact the Republican party seems the one to keep it's word.Theodore Roosevelt, who was lately quoted on this subject, had much to say about keeping your word. Bottom line: Just Do It. Same way about Ronald Reagan. Same way about Charlton Heston, John Wayne, George W.Bush, Rush Limbaugh, both sets of my grandparents, Abraham Lincoln, and last, but not least, my father. As a matter of fact Arnold sounded a lot like my Dad last night. I don't mean with an Austrian accent. I mean in what he said. My Dad, of course, having been a WWII veteran was a little more out spoken. He would have thought of Rush as a little too liberal. My Dad reminded me of what is now called an action hero. Not jumping out of helicopters, or ripping full grown trees out of the ground. I mean doing what he said he would do. Of course, knowing a lot of action heroes were Republican says a lot. As I said, Theodore Roosevelt, Abraham Lincoln, John Wayne, Ronald Reagan, Charleton Heston, Arnold, and my Dad, not one of which I would have wanted to argue with. A man keeps his word. And you know what, I figure if Arnold supports George W.Bush and despite what some people think Bush has done what he promised, then Arnold must know what he's talking about. And I wouldn't want to argue with Ah-Nold. ------------ About the author: Lee Zelhart is a proud graduate of McKendree College in Lebanon, Illinois.
