Sept. 1, 2004 Last night I started to view the Republican convention, it was the usual assortment of speeches, preaching to the choir. No surprise there; then came Rudolph Giuliani, former Mayor of New York City and a man that proved his mettle in the aftermath of the most cowardly attack in the history of the United States. He also went on to remind the American public what a fine job President Bush did during those tragic days that followed the cowardly attacks. But what really caught my attention were the newscasts the next morning. The three major networks barely mentioned or acknowledged the convention and the speakers. They instead showed the protesters over and over. One film clip that caught my attention was a black male protester who knocked a New York City Detective off a scooter and began punching and kicking the officer with wild abandon, while a crowd had happy expressions on their faces. The media also seemed to be tripping over themselves to interview the radical protesters and plaster their faces on the screen. Yet coverage of actually events were limited to small sound bites and a brief explanation of what the speaker said, giving the world the impression that the American people are too stupid to understand a speech. The protesters however needed no translators; their message came through loud and clear. They were there to disrupt and try to halt the democratic process by any means they could think of. The protesters have a legion of lawyers advising them to break any laws they deem are objectionable to them, as long as they get their faces on camera, that’s all that matters to them. Sorta reminds me of Jesse Jackson, he never met a camera he didn’t like. Jackson would go to a supermarket opening if he thought there were cameras there. Back to the protesters. Here it seems are a bunch of people that are hell-bent on disrupting everyday life in one of the largest cities in the world, all to get across their message that they dislike the current President of the United States and anything remotely connected with him and his party. None of them seem to remember that three short years ago, this city was under attack by persons that were intent on killing as many Americans as they possibly could, the terror cowards, I’m sure didn’t check the flight manifests to determine whether the passengers were Democrats, Republicans, Independent, or protester scum. As long as there were warm bodies and innocent souls to destroy, they were content. Now come the ‘brave’ protesters who are playing right into the terrorist’s camel dung stained hands. The terrorists must be watching CNN or any other news media outlet and dancing whirls of joy at the stupid Americans, who put the economy, healthcare, welfare and social issues before the safety, security and well being of this nation. Without the security of the nation, you’ll have no economy, welfare or social issues, all you will have are large piles of ashes that used to be humans and buildings. This is what I suspect the protesters really want; a nation that is so timid, a Girl Scout troop could invade and take control. I realize the protesters have every right to make their opinions and feelings known, even have the right to assemble to express those feelings and opinions, but not at the expense of a policeman’s injuries, a Nation’s security. They require a police presence, to protect them and the people and property they are sure to injure or harm in some way. What they may not realize is that for every police officer to watch their inane antics, they are taking police officers away from the job they were hired to do, protect the general public from terrorists and other criminals in general, but then again; they probably are fully aware of the impact of their actions and say and think, “The public be damned, we want to disrupt all that we can to cause chaos”, this is the mindset of these morons. They will do anything to get in the papers and on TV. Now that the protesters have center stage, they aren’t just protesting the war, they are protesting about poor people, AIDS and any other social problem you and they can think of. I wish someone would point out to them that the military they scorn and deride so much are responsible for the rights they so dearly enjoy. But you will never hear an anarchist thank a Veteran; they’ll thank former president Clinton instead. Most poor people wouldn’t be poor if they went to school and paid attention to the teachers instead of the latest fashions and music trends. AIDS has been in the limelight since the early 1980s. How much more can we spend on AIDS education or condoms before someone realizes that the AIDS rate has grown in parts of California and Africa? Throwing money at a problem is not always the best solution to the situation. Health care has been promised to the citizens of the United States for the last decade, yet the only progress I have seen has come from the Bush administration, they implemented a prescription plan that will help many people. Maybe the protesters should move on to San Francisco or Africa, that’s where their real protest targets reside. End Note: In my previous column about activist judges and courts; I mistakenly stated that the jurist in Massachusetts pushed for the legislators to pass a law enabling homosexual marriage. Reader Scott Hutcheson of Long Beach, CA wrote to me and pointed out my error. I offer no excuses for my error; the wrong information was entirely my fault due to poor research. Thank you to Mr. Hutcheson for bringing this to my attention. ------------ About the author: Mike Romer is a politically incorrect, disgruntled resident of New Jersey and thinks a lot of people need their heads screwed on properly.
