Oct. 30, 2004 Statistics on the US population's health are alarming. Childhood and adult obesity and life threatening disease are on the rise. Among contributing factors is the sedentary lifestyle that has become more the norm than the exception. As a working mom, I understand the pressures parents face today - but by shifting priorities we can implement changes that yield rewards. I was talking to a single mother of two elementary school children recently. Despite her complaints that she had no energy, she wasn't about to change her lifestyle - even after hearing the facts about how exercise and healthy eating habits can boost energy, change metabolic rate and even help to combat depression! Up until two years ago, I had that same mentality. I hardly bothered to study the ingredients of foods that I purchased, always being in such a hurry. I never exercised and felt miserable. Then I started to change my thinking. I began to realize that health at home starts with me. I decided to make a change. Since then, we have all begun to reap the benefits. Here's how I do it. First of all, when I shop for my family, I read nutritional information, you only have to read it once to know whether or not you want to have your family consuming the listed ingredients! I began to work out for a half hour each day. Denise Austin does a great show in the morning on Lifetime TV. www.lifetimetv.com . She is a member of the President's National Fitness Council and through watching and listening to her, I learned many ways that I could get my family out of the sedentary rut that we were in! Now, I exercise five times a week, my family notices how good I look and feel and they are enthusiastic about getting involved in living healthy too! Find a half hour to exercise each day, or at least three times a week. A stitch in time saves nine, as the old saying goes. Educate yourself! Enlist your family's help with household chores to free up time for family activities, such as taking a walk after dinner, or a weekend bike ride. Before automobiles, people walked. Before packaged food, people cooked. Before TV, people read! I am not suggesting we go back to the old days - but I am suggesting that we put aside modern conveniences that rob us of our right to live well. Many modern inventions were designed to save time - use the time saved to invest in your health - you deserve it and so does your family. If we eat well, exercise regularly and work toward a balance in our lives - we are far less likely to become ill. Healthcare costs are on the rise. You can help ensure that you will be there for your children for years to come, and by example teach them how to do the same. Society starts at home. Make health a priority and lets change our thinking one family at a time! ------------ About the author: Annette Robe is a novelist currently working on submission of her first book, part of a trilogy.
