When The Bad Afflicts The Good Among Us

By Judy Ramsook
Oct. 30, 2004

Some people say that in order to have a good life, one must also be good or kind to his fellow man, but as I look around me, I see instances of cases in which the unpleasant sometimes takes a hold of some of the good.

For there you are, probably doing all the right things you are supposed to be doing, like exercising good manners, being faithful to your spouse/mate, and practising honesty, when out of the blue, here comes an event that may change your life for a while, like maybe your car malfunctions, and that's because you make sure and upkeep it the best you can, or it could be something else such as a sudden medical condition.

Then there is the guy in the office cubicle next to yours who comes in whistling a cheerful tune everyday. He is the total opposite of you, in that he lies, cheats on the wife or mate, wins the scratch off lottery ever so often, and the next thing you hear is that this same guy has received a job promotion, while you are still waiting for your chance at a new job title.

So you go home at the end of the day wondering what am I doing wrong? It may even turn out that there is nothing you are doing wrong, but since the 'bad guy' is having such a successful life, does not mean you have to suddenly start a streak of a type of behaviour that does not become you. Such as the one that he, the 'bad guy' has.

For that is not part of who you are. Keep on being the nice person for, your promotion and scratch off winnings might be just around the corner because good things may come to us, but not in the way that we always expect them to. Sometimes life has a way of trying our pateince and as 'Oscar Wilde' once said, 'When the gods want to punish us, they answer our prayers.' So next time, you, the good man or woman sees that the bad person next to you is ecstactic about a new victory, remember that.
