Oct. 29, 2004 I have been a fan of the 'King Arthur' tales ever since I first read about them starting with an introduction to the stories in high school and when I reached the college level I also studied the legend in one of my English Literature classes. I do not look at the 'King Arthur' movies anymore, because sad to say, the ending is always the same no matter which young and handsome actor happens to be playing the role of the legendary king. With him, 'King Arthur' ending up first becoming a victim of infidelity, when 'Gwynevere' falls for the dashing 'Sir Launcelot,' which ironically leads to the King's downfall as his son, Mordred, seeking a fast way to be the new owner of the throne, kills him, the king, in a battle in which he, Mordred also ends up among the deceased. And according to 'Malory's''Le Morte D'Arthur,' when given the opportunity for 'Gwynevere' and 'Sir Launcelot' to finally have a go at their relationship, she, 'Gwynevere' joins a convent and 'Sir Launcelot' goes to a monastery for he was reluctant to break his 'vows' from 'Gwyenevere.' Shocking as that may seem, it just goes to show that 'Gwynevere' felt a great amount of culpibility at being in a way, responsible for the demise of the King. The depth of which, and of 'Gwyenevere's' own free will led her to join the institution. The impression I perceived from 'Malory's' accounts of the events, is that, if she, 'Gwyenevere' had not become a member of the convent, then 'Sir Launcelot' would not have joined the monastery either. For ultimately, if he, 'Sir Launcelot' could not be with his 'Queen' then by being in the monastery, he is displaying that he would rather be locked away just as she is from the rest of the world, in the 'Tower Of London.' And while chivalry may not be dead, we have literary reminders of a great legend.
