Oct. 29, 2004 One issue that has received scant attention in the 2004 presidential election is George W. Bush's poisoning of America. This frustrates me. It is an issue that John Kerry should be beating Mr. Bush over the head with everyday for on this issue Mr. Bush is clearly the one wearing the black hat. Environmental issues are being completely ignored by the corporate-controlled media. This is an unprecedented conspiracy of journalistic negligence because there is nothing more important to the American people than the air we breathe and the water we drink. Polls show that--overwhelmingly--Americans are in favor of cleaner air and water standards even if it means paying a higher price. Ironically, with modern technology the cost of lowering pollution is not that high, yet busines criminals still wish to maximize profits at the expense of our health. Mr. Bush is a paid-off crony of these business criminals. Various industries give large bribes (campaign donations) to Mr. Bush and in exchange he takes rules that they write and turns them into executive orders. He also won't enforce existing rules that might eat into industry profits. Books have been written about this, but I will just highlight a few examples. Utility companies give Mr. Bush bribes. In return he pushes the Clear Skies Initiative (an Orwellian name) that eliminates the Clean Air Act which Richard Nixon had the integrity to sign into law. According to the Washington Post the Clear Skies Initiative will lead to 17,800 more premature deaths over a fifteen year period than an alternative Senate plan. Thankfully, many of the provisions in the Initiative have been challenged and shot down in state courts. Mr. Bush takes bribes from lumber companies, and in return he pushes for the Healthy Forests Initiative (another Orwellian name). Ostensibly, this is supposed to reduce forest fires, but what it really is is an excuse to clear cut forests. Clear cutting practices increase catastrophic forest fires according to scientific forest studies done by foresters employed by universities across the country. Mr. Bush takes bribes from the lead industry, and in return he puts lead industry consultants on the committee that determines how much lead is safe for us to drink. Naturally, lead industry consultants push for levels of lead that are ten times higher than what mainstream scientists say are safe. Mr. Bush takes bribes from energy companies, and in return he has the EPA let the industries have emission credits instead of forcing the industries to clean up mercury. The technology to reduce mercury emissions would cost the industry 1% of it's profits. But I guess Mr. Bush is in favor of poisoning us with mercury. As it is now, five million women of child-bearing age have mercury poisoning. Mercury poisoning causes spontaneous abortions and permanent brain damage of children born to these women. I thought Mr. Bush was against abortion. Even Al Capone wouldn't condone the poisoning of five million women. That is why I consider Mr. Bush to be nothing more than a corrupt gangster. ------------ About the author Mark Gelbart: I've written a novel entitled Talk Radio. I'm still looking for a publisher.
