Who Are We?

By Amanda Baker
Oct. 27, 2004

When an important event happens people get wrapped up in the moment. Some forget the importance of the moment and look at where they are going, not why or how the event happened. The force of moving forward makes the past become blurred with commentary and rationalizing.

This sadly has happened. People forget why, who, and how many died in the Trade Center crashes. Yes, images are plastered all over TV and commentaters remind us daily that the event did in fact happen. But why? That is still not quite understood and sadly probably never will be.

The event that happened on September 11, 2001 was a sad event. That date marks when many innocent people died. But what have we done in their name that honors their deaths. We gave the families money, and are rebuilding a new tower to stand in the place of the old.

Does it honor a slain person to take revenge?

Does it reflect on who we are as a society that we need revenge?

Aren't we acting like those who hate us?

I don't have the answers. But it is time to reflect on what has happened. It is time to look at the leaders present and future. They are the ones who dictate who we are in the worlds eyes.

A corner drug store owner has no say in the reasoning behind sending troops to defend freedoms. A soldier only follows orders. And the dead can not speak for themselves. Its the politicians that must answer for their actions.
