Health Fairs Should Serve Foods That Are Nutritious, Not Fattening

By Judy Ramsook

I could not help but notice an ad in the local paper today which was advertising a health fair for seniors,(people over the age of fifty-five) and to top things off, the ad included a dinner of chicken fried chicken to probably further entice the elders in our midst.

Now while chicken is easier to digest and low in fat than its red meat rival, (beef) isn't fried chicken loaded with grease, oils and sodium that most doctors warn us to abstain from due to forming high levels of cholesterol and such? It just seems to me, that if one is to lure a group of senior citizens to a 'health fair' at least provide a meal that reflects the reason for the gathering.

Maybe a meal that fights high cholesterol like perhaps one that includes more vegetables than protein, for seniors need to guard their nutrients also and strengthen their bones and skin as age sets in, especially with the increasing rise of such ailments as arthritis and osteoporosis just to name a couple. And instead of gulping down a glass of 'Metamucil' everyday, they, the seniors should try consuming more high fiber foods for a more natural way to gain comfort or a glass of water just before bedtime will also aid in such comfort. Such fiber is found in vegetables and roughage, like spinach, okra, squash, just to name few.

Now I am quite aware that most people frown at the notion of consuming vegetables, but it will aid you in the long run. I once tried to date a guy who seemed to be quite compatible with me a few months ago, but when he told me that he never ate vegetables, I shuddeded to think how ill this person would be by the time he hits forty.

But seniors should still be careful about what they consume, for with aging also comes the slowing down of the metabolism, so they also need to eat food that will be easy on the digestive system and the rest of the body's internal organs as well, for you, the country's seniors, are and have been an important part of society and we wish to ensure that your 'Golden Years' are well spent and are as pain free as possible.
