An Insiders View of the Ashley Simpson Caper

By Don Barrett
Oct. 25, 2004

About this Ashley Simpson caper, having spent five years with Dick Clark (back in the 80's) I know a little something about staging a live television concert. Among the shows I did were the 30th Anniversary of American Bandstand, the American Music Awards, The Academy of Country Music Awards, The Golden Globes, The Cable Ace Awards, and the list goes on. Basically there are three ways an artist performs on television or live in concert.

1. The artist actually sings live direct from their mouths to your ears. The foremost group of such performers will be found in Las Vegas in highly specialized venues. Examples: Clint Holmes, Danny Gans, Rita Rudner and so it goes...

2. Most television shows, concerts and award shows are live to SMPTE track. Their backup are playing air (name the instrument), and singer actually sings - with their own voice.

3. Lip Synch - You mouth the words that has already been recorded. People who are adept at lip synching can fool a lot of people. The reason for lip synch is that the running time of the show is known in advance. You wouldn't want the Academy Awards to leave the air before they announced Best Picture.

Here's a little light trivia. During the 34 years that American Bandstand was on the air, only one performer refused to lip synch under any consitions. Guess who it was: Jerry Lee Lewis - Great Balls of Fire!!

PS: SMPTE track is used for coordinating everything from lighting effects, to song mix and pyrotechnics. SMPTE Drop Frame is 29.97 frames per second.
