Stigmata...The Unexplained Gift

By Phoenix Morric
Oct. 25, 2004

In 1945, outside the cave where the Dead Sea Scrolls were found, the Nag Hamadi, a.k.a "The Gospel of St. Thomas," was discovered. It is believed by scholars to be one of the earliest written gospels and the only one written in Aramaic: the language of the historical Jesus Christ. (Interesting facet of this language is that it contains no vowels.)

Ironically, The Vatican considers this gospel heresy, thus a lot of people don't know about it, nor have they read it. It is threatening to the church due to its references that the institution of the Church isn't your link to The Great Spirit/Jesus/the ethereal, unspeakable to common tongues...but that self realization, and spiritual growth i.e. "the kingdom of heaven, is within you." (churches are just buildings is the perceived threat is how it came to be labeled heretical.)

The first known stigmatic - one who suddenly was afflicted with the wounds as described as received by Jesus, was St. Francis of Assisi. He was a wild young man, until the age of 23, when he then had a vision of being crucified alongside Jesus and when he came too, he had identical wounds in his wrists and feet. (as if crucified.)

Fresh wounds that appear without warning, don't respond to medical treatment, and afflict deeply religous people, only. It is also in religous lore that there must be 12 stigmatics on the planet at any given time, to mirror the number of disciples of Jesus.(For the past two centuries religous historians have documented this to be truth.) These wounds are accompanied by deep conflict, pain and rapture. Also, the smell of roses is common and the blood is a brighter red than normal. (Example of another Stigmatic is Padre Pio...he lost up to a pint of blood a day, but lived to old age.)

Another interesting facet of stigmata is that 90% of those afflicted have been women. Also, the flow of blood seems to defy gravity. Of note, too, stigmata continues until this day.

The Gospel of St. Thomas is believed to have been written before Matthew, Mark, Luke and John, yet remains a mystery, as well as stigmata.

As a writer and Philosophy of World Religion's student, I have found this phenomena which occurs in the United States and literally all over the world to be quite interesting. I present this to those willing to remain open- minded enough to not learn for themselves in studying such matters. Some 300 documented cases of Stigmata exist. Also, not everything called heresy necessarily is...and how can you know if you don't search it out with your own heart?
