Oct. 25, 2004 Has anyone else noticed how, all of a sudden and out of the blue, the Democrats have become "deficit hawks?" This, from a party that ran up deficits for 30 straight years trying to finance LBJ's idiotic "War on Poverty" which ran up a tab of 5 TRILLION DOLLARS and didn't reduce the percentage of people living in "poverty" one iota! Why is it that when Democrats engage in deficit spending in order to buy more votes, it's OK, but if a Republican Congress does so in response to a sneak attack on our soil, that's "irresponsible?" If I live another 40 years, I'll never understand the rationale behind that attitude. "It's OK to mortgage our kids' financial future to pay the tab for lazy, unproductive, irresponsible people who want something for nothing, but it's NOT OK to pay the cost of rebuilding our military defense posture and wage war against our country's implacable enemies?" That attitude on the part of the left in this country SHOULD have us all scratching our heads in wonderment. The media have succeeded in convincing lots of us that such an attitude is not only "humane" but actually logical when it's the furthest thing POSSIBLE from either. Ask yourselves this question. Is it more "humane" to provide, free of charge or responsibility, subsistence-level sustinence for anyone who wants to plead "poverty" but who won't take responsibility for their own behavior, or is it "humane" to create an economic climate in which self-reliance and diligence are both encouraged and rewarded? Everyone's familiar with the adage of the fish..."Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime." It's never been more true than it is today in this country. The left wants to take the fish from those who catch them or grow them, without just compensation, and give them to those who neither know HOW to fish nor care to ever learn. As the latter group grows in numbers, we rapidly approach a level at which government interference in that system becomes completely unsustainable. We're getting close. The attitude that "government" OWES you something may be the most destructive attitude we can instill in our kids. This is true for all of us but is especially true in the urban black communities. The race-baiters and race-hustlers are given unlimited access to these people and have convinced large numbers of them that, since some distant relative was brought to this continent in chains, the rest of us now somehow "owe" them a living...or, at the very least, "reparations." The only "reparations" to which anyone is entitled is a ticket "home" for those whose ancestors didn't want to come here and who think that they'd be better off if those evil white men hadn't brought them here in the first place. I'd be HAPPY to contribute my share to paying THAT sort of reparations. The Democrats are currently actually ENCOURAGING black Americans to pursue monetary payments out of the national treasury to any black man, woman or child whose ancestors were once slaves. Nonsense! No American alive today has ever either BEEN a slave or OWNED one. I might consider reparations for anyone who can prove that any part of their lives (or their parents' lives, for that matter--just to be generous) was spent in slavery to any American man or woman. It's the height of hypocrisy for the Democrats to encourage this victim mentality since it's grounded in the belief that supporting the phony "reparations" movement is yet another way to hold black Americans in thrall to the Democrat Party. Fortunately, there're a growing number of black Americans who are getting the message that Republicans have been trying to get out for decades through the blockades thrown up by the liberal press. That is, that if you are talented, diligent, honorable, reliable and loyal, you'll prosper in this country completely WITHOUT any "government" largesse to "help" you, and that, in point of fact, government "help" is a trap that'll keep you dependent upon the good offices of the federal bureaucracy throughout your life if you let it. Amazingly, the Democrats teach our kids just the opposite (or at least TRY to). In their world, if you're born poor and black, the deck is so stacked against you that the only way for you to succeed is for the limosine liberals to "give" you what you need to survive. The catch is (and the Democrats NEVER want this to get out) you'll be beholden to them for the rest of your lives. It's sort of like the proverbial loan sharks who charge 100% interest PER WEEK. Now, before the reader gets the idea that I'm unaware of the fact that there are more white people on welfare than there are blacks...I AM. However, this issue is about hypocrisy--not necessarily welfare. As a percentage of their total populations, there are more blacks per black capita on welfare than there are whites or other ethnic minorities, although Hispanics are rapidly catching up. Why is this? It CERTAINLY isn't because blacks are somehow "inferior." They are not. In my opinion, the principle reason is that black Americans are constantly bombarded with "victimhood"--from their "leaders," from the media (including Hollywood) and, worst of all, from inner city public schools. They are being told that they aren't really able to succeed in America because of institutional racism--about which they are powerless to do anything. When you're taught from Headstart on that, since the evil majority hates you because of your skin color, you are "at bat" with two strikes already against you, it's little wonder that you grow up with deep-seated feelings of inferiority, which breed resentment and anger, which breed disdain for those elements in the American culture that are proven to help one succeed--avid pursuit of education, diligence, loyalty, honesty and integrity. Please don't misunderstand. I am NOT saying that those traits are absent in black Americans. I AM saying that 'way too large a percentage of black Americans are being taught from childhood that such traits are meaningless for them because they are "victims" of white racism, and much of that attitude is encouraged by the Democrats who see black Americans as a vital bloc of voters to retain political power. If black Americans split their votes equally between Republicans and Democrats, Democrats would seldom win elections at all--and Democrats KNOW this. One sure way for black Americans to begin to fully enjoy the benefits of this free society is to FORCE political parties to contend for their votes. As things are now, the GOP generally dismisses any idea of competing for the black vote because blacks tend to be almost monolithic in their support for Democrats--so why bother. Democrats, on the other hand, mostly take the black vote for granted and do little to compete for it either except for occasionally throwing black America a "sop" such as creating a "safe" black Congressional district--mostly because they KNOW that they can count on (usually) about 90% of the black vote no matter what. For blacks to advance politically in this country, they are going to HAVE to force the major parties to compete with one another for the black vote--just as they are forced to compete for the white vote. Of black voters continue in their monolithic support of liberal Democrats, they are destined to remain an underclass--in general. In this, the Democrats once again show their monumental capacity for utter hypocrisy. "We're 'for' you and therefore you must support US." NEVER, "We're 'for' the United States of America and, like it or not, that's our first priority--not in being responsible for some ethnic group's support or maintenance." Democrats are, in general, convinced of their own LACK of hypocrisy. Rationally examining their own Party's policies would prove otherwise, but the left tends to think in terms of "feelings"-- not rationality. That may be one of the reasons why Hollywood is so predominantly liberal. That community lives in an emotional morass for much of their professional lives where being able to portray emotion is considered to be the height of competence and talent. In short, they live their lives in "fact-free zones" of existence. No rational person could possibly believe that the AIDS pandemic is worthy of essentially granting a virus civil rights, but that's the way it's viewed among liberals and especially in Hollywood. Democrats think nothing whatsoever is wrong with Michael Moore's recent movie, which is demonstrably full of exaggerations, lies, distortions and half-truths yet is presented to us as a "documentary." Democrats are pulling out all the stops to prevent the showing of "Stolen Honor," a true documentary about the damage Kerry did to the country and to his fellow veterans, however. In short, the very epitome of hypocrisy. "Free speech for everyone, but PARTICULARLY for those who share our point of view and NEVER for those who don't." ------------ About the author: David A.
